It's all about time, I guess. It could take up to a second for a human being to make sure all the mechanics have raised their hands to indicate that their job is done and raise the lollipop. It would take the machine perhaps a tenth of a second to do so. That's the best part of a second shaved off the total pitstop time which, as you know, can make all the difference, especially if you've got an opponent who is staying out longer and lapping pretty quickly.

Yeah, I suppose so. :)

In theory, it's a brilliant system, though it lacks the ability to think, which is crucial. You could say that an enhancement would be some kind of sensor that could judge the distance between any oncoming traffic and the pit box, work out how long it would be before that car passed the box and then decide accordingly whether to release the car instantly or wait until the other has passed. Personally, I'd rather have a person there than a machine for safety reasons, but ultimately it's not my choice and Ferrari may well be able to make it work safely and effectively. :)

The green light system isn't all that novel. Similar systems are used in the DTM as well as Australia's V8 supercar series. I'm not sure it makes much of a difference , lollipop man or light, the driver will go when he sees the indicator either light or lollipop. I'm not sold that Kimi jumped the light, why would he just "decide to leave" . I believe, as some have said, that there is a person controlling the light, that makes more sense to me.

Imagine if Hamilton would have done that. The internet would have exploded like Kimi's engine.

i was thinking the exact same thing, funny how those noisy pathetic Hamilton bashers have double standards over driver gaffs

That's because Kimi doesn't have the Ronspeak 2000 implant, Kimi is cool, Hamilton is a corporate @ss kisser.

Kimi has the run-over-pit-crew-push-kids-and-photographers-over chip you see.

Doh! Well I see I was wrong and that Kimi has "taken responsibility" for running over the crewman. Whether he's just "taking one for the team" as we say here in the US or its really true , who knows. Guess it doesn't matter though since thats the official version :P

A replay on RTL showed clearly that KR jumped the lights - it was still yellow when he bolted off. The same thing could and has happened with a lollipop man. In fact, how many times have we seen that the lollipop man raised the lollipop only to drop it again once he realized they weren't done with refuelling due to some problem? That of course has led to similar problems with drivers running over people or leaving with the fuel hose attached to the car or they got smacked in the helmet by the lowered-again lollipop, etc.
