What the hell is the matter with Lax Nosey at the moment?

Have you seen the proposed 2008 regulations? OMG! :x

3 Year engine freeze - whateva that means
1 tyre manufacturer :roll:
No spare car
Gearbox to last 4 races
Ban on tyre blankets
Return to slicks (horrah)
And it goes on, weight penalties for engine change (whether that's for failure or change in design [see point 1] I don't know!)

And this is how he's trying to bring it about, one-up manship like this is destroying the sport:

BMW Sauber AG
Honda GP Limited
McLaren Racing Limited
Renault F1 Limited
Toyota Motorsport GmbH
Grand Prix Manufacturers Association

22 March 2006

Gentlemen

Thank you for your letter of 21 March, which was sent to us at 22.11 last night.

The World Motor Sport Council took account of the contents of your letter, but noted that it contained no proposal which could be substituted for any of those in front of the Council, sent to you on 1 March and then again, with minor modifications, on 15 March.

The World Motor Sport Council has also noted that none of you attended the meetings which were held early in 2005 to discuss the 2008 regulations, despite repeated invitations to do so, and that the proposals which you promised to deliver to us in June 2005 are still not to hand.

In the circumstances, the Council decided to adopt the proposed Sporting Regulations in their entirety and extend an invitation to all interested teams to enter the 2008 Championship and participate in discussions on any element which they believe could be improved.

The Council noted that although the 2008 Sporting Regulations are now fixed, any element could be changed on proposal of a simple majority of the entered teams sitting in the Sporting Working Group (Appendix 5) and that the Formula 1 Commission or World Motor Sport Council would only reject such proposal in the overall interests of the Formula One World Championship or of motor sport in general.

Yours sincerely
Max Mosley

Now they want to extend it to 5 years, eurosport has this :
Formula One's governing body has agreed with Ferrari, Renault and Cosworth that engine regulations should be frozen from 2008 to 2012. The FIA said in a statement on Monday that the proposal intended to "encourage research into engine efficiency and the more effective use of available energy".

All those present at the meeting at Ferrari's Maranello factory on Friday agreed on extending a three-year freeze initially put forward by the FIA to five years.

However, certain modifications would be allowed on an annual basis, provided details were provided to the governing body before the start of each calendar year in question and a complete engine was delivered by Feb 1.

"No modification will be permitted which, in the opinion of the FIA, may result in a performance gain," the statement added.

The governing body said those present would also seek to change the 2007 sporting regulations to bring forward the 2008 proposals.

The engine regulations changed this season, with teams using 2.4 litre V8 units instead of 3.0 litre V10s. So far, champions Renault have shown the greatest reliability in winning the first two races.

But I don't quite get it, can anybody help ?

Especially :
"No modification will be permitted which, in the opinion of the FIA, may result in a performance gain," the statement added.

So the team with the strongest engine at the start of 2008 will have the strongest engine for the following 5 years ? Because nobody is allowed changes which increases performance ? Is this well thought out or am I misunderstanding something here ?

I've heard it all now !! What kind of motorsport has a rule which restricts increasing engine performance ?

This Max fella needs to have his head read !

3. The elements of the engine which can be changed in this way on an annual basis, are:

ports;
combustion chamber shape;
valve size, shape, and angle;
piston crown (the weight of the piston must remain the same, as must piston ring position and compression height);
camshaft profiles and valve actuation kinematics;
intake manifolds;
injector nozzles (not injector actuator);
spark plugs;
changes to the cylinder head consequential upon and limited to those resulting from the above;

4. Changes to the engine on the “fair and equitable” principle will be limited to those that the FIA is satisfied are carried out and necessary for cost reduction or reliability. No modification will be permitted which, in the opinion of the FIA, may result in a performance gain. These changes will be published by the FIA.

5. For 2007, those present will endeavour to secure changes to the 2007 Sporting Regulations to incorporate the 2008 engine homologation regulations (Article 86(e) and Appendix 6) into the 2007 Regulations, including a limitation of engine speed.

Point no. 4 is more elaborated in the present version.

What puzzles me here is under pt. 5: [...] including a limitation of engine speed. HUH? WTF? Are they talking about revs here? Then say so!
