I know that an engine has to last two race weekends, but that doesn't include midweek practices correct? They just swap the race engine out and don't use it til they get to the track on Friday right?

An engine must last two consecutive race meetings, if an engine is changed before the start of qualifying, a ten place grid penalty is applied. If an engine is changed after the start of qualifying, the driver must start the race from the back of the grid. On Friday practice, teams are free to use another engine unit; should the engine coming from the previous race be used, it must be used since Saturday free practice, qualifying and then Sunday race.

Hey welcome bro or should I say parndner exactly where are you in the great state of Texas? Wow now we have a whole three members from Texas, cool!! 8)

O hey fellow Texan!

So to clarify, an engine must last through off-week practice, race weekend, another off-week practice and another race weekend?

Basically yes except for the friday practice.

i think he is asking about test sessions like the one just gone in Silverstone. the engine and probably chassis used in the test would be different to the ones used at the last race.

after each GP the engines would get all sealed up and numbered so FIA scrutineers would check the seals and so on at the next GP make sure nothings been done to the engine nor did a switcharoo.

I think so, too.

The race engines must last for the saturday and sunday of 2 consecutive race weekends, for test sessions away from race events they'll use different engines and on friday practice sessions at race events they are allowed to use a different engine if they want to.

If a driver doesn't finish a race then I think the engine can be replaced without penalty at the next race regardless of whether the engine is on it's 1st or 2nd race and the first engine failure of the season for a driver that would incur a penalty under these rules is free of any penalty.

a driver or team is suppposed to use engines for at least two weeks, i think it does include mid week practice however if the car crashes i.e crash, or engine failure, then they can change it with no ppenalties, i think

The engine has to last for 2 quali sessions (and saturday practice I think) and 2 races, during any testing away from actual race events they use other engines and even possibly use other engines during friday/thursday practice sessions at race events. If the race engine fails or is replaced at any time during the 2 race weekends (other than during the race) then the driver recieves a grid penalty except for the first time. If it fails during the race or the driver fails to finish the race for whatever reason they are free to change the engine for the next race.

They definitely don't use the race engines for any testing away from race events.

afaik anyway.

I'd really like to see that: replace the engine DURING the race

Heh, yeah, can see them doing an engine change in under 1 1/2 hours to get a couple of laps in and then get a grid penalty at the next race for their efforts.

EDIT: Ah no, got that wrong, they wouldn't get a penalty.
