I don't know about Paddy. Not sure what the draw was there, especially over Ross. I seem to remember working out the years Paddy would have designed the McLaren car, because the designers alternated, and being a bit worried that he seems to have designed the car in the bad years.

I read somewhere, and I THINK it was in an article the judge wrote about engines, in the same link as the one about driver salaries, that Ross had them started on the new engine long before Ferrari and Renault and the instructions he gave to the engine people was 'think outside the box' . It certainly paid off. It grates a bit with me hearing Paddy trying to take credit for the success.

Mercedes are dominating. They dominated also in 1954 before withdrawing from racing following the awful Le Mans crash. There are some startling similarities to their previous domination and the current one, particularly in regard to their preparation for a rule change.

There are probably some startling similarities to the invasion of Poland in the 30s, err hold on, I might be mixing things up here :hehe:

Sometimes when recruiting people it's easy to not look beyond the pleasantness. Mercedes have a long running association with McLaren and it's clear to see why their employees would be attractive to Mercedes. Just looking at the WDC table, Ricciardo seems to be slowly creeping up behind. Let's hope it doesn't end in tears.

8 races left, Ricc would have to win 3 races with both Merc drivers failing to score in each one just to be with a shot over 5 races. Sounds unlikely, but then all it takes is Merc 1,2 with Ricc 3rd, Mercs collide, Ricc wins - but 3 times?

I failed to see why Paddy was so sought after by Mercedes, what's his track record? I can't see it.

And now his own track record at Mercedes is starting off with the fastest car and 90% bullet proof....and at midway just about the fastest car, 50% bullet proof.

Is it just his Toto buddy who convinced the Merc board? Or is there really something so special about Paddy that it was seen as a big blow for McLaren to lose him?

Paddy is without doubt one of the best engineering resources managers/ project manager on the grid. When folks talked about Mclaren out developing intra season etc they really meant his ability to allocate and prioritise the budget and resources. He is not a designing engineer but a management engineer with strong mechanical conceptualisation (ronspeak)
I think part of the reason he left McLaren in disgust was the way his overall direction of resources was hijacked for disturbing reason

So as a technical overseer he is proven, however as a TP with final say intrackside strategy and driver management? :yikes: I think we are seeing the reason the best TPs iover the years were bigger than life dictator types who would bash the driver in public if they had to - the Ron school of TP.

Paddy is obviously a nice gentle fellow but can you imagine him saying boo to a goose?

Very true, 50 points in Abu Double with both Merc drivers crashing out would be slapstick of the highest quality.

Also for Ricc to have a chance, RBR would have to make Seb the number 2 driver immediately and make sure he supports Ricc on track

Would be interesting to see if Seb maintains his 'sportsmanship' in this case :hooli-popcorn:

Lol I can see that totally. Seb allowing himself to be number two? LOL

Giving up both the number 1 and going to the yellow T bar for good measure.
