It's going to be on the quiet side here next weekend with so many of the membership away or better said... On site.

Luckily for you guys, unluckily for me, my Silverstone plans went up in smoke, when my cars turbo decided that it's exhaust turbine wanted to live in the catalytic converter.

A little advertised fact about turbos in road cars is that they should not just be turned off whilst hot. You really need to allow them to cool down formany minutes before switching the engine off. Switching the engine off right after a fast drive is ok for ICE but the turbo is like 20 times hotter and switching it off without a cooling off period is a killer.
But ofcourse that would not be good for sales were they to advertise that fact, you can prolong the life of a turbo big time by doing this because ebven the fans that stay on after you switch off are nowhere as effective stationary as when you cruise for a few miles before switching off

Oh I know that mate, I have had Evo's etc in the past. It just surprises me that not many if any manufacturers build turbo timers into cars. The closest I can think of is my mate has an exige and that lowers the Rev limit until the engine is hot.


To be fair the garage said it was the original turbo and it has done 160k miles.

What are you guys living in the 80's?

Just about every turbo put into a road car today can go the life of the car and then some (with the exception of chipped or overboosted cars) without issues and people turn the car off without thinking about it. It's tough to find a car today that can't go 100k miles without any maintenance whatsoever other than brakes and regular oil and fluid changes. Tough luck indeed jabs that you happened to find one of them.
