I'm really hoping next year for a McLaren/Merc/Williams battle but for this I fear Button may not be up to the task.

Read something today that was very pro renewing his contract and was quick to point out that Button has bested his teammate so far this year. No mention of the fact that when they've both been in the points or they've both finished that it's very even with Mags coming in only a position or two behind Button, and disregard the performance gap in some circuits where Mags had driven the car beyond where it should be, while Button languished outside of the points.

Jenson has finished ahead of his rookie pal at the chequered flag by a count of 5 to 2, as Magnussen had a DNF in Bahrain. The Brit has also been ahead of his team mate for 293 laps whilst young gun Kev has so far managed just 195 laps as the lead McLaren in a race.

Qualifying is a dead heat. 4 each. Yet a closer examination of these numbers reveals that by averaging each driver’s qualifying laps for the 8 races to date, Jenson is a whopping 0.309s behind Kevin Magnussen.

While we are discussing Button, I came across this truly outstanding example of his contribution to McLaren over the years

This is in response to the news FIA want to introduce standing restarts.

Button complaining about a lack of grip EVEN BEFORE they have introduced the rule

A sceptical Button, currently the most experienced driver in F1, said: “The standing restart idea is great for the fans. It puts on a great show because the start is a very exciting part of the race.

“The thing is, though, when you start a race you have new tyres. You could find yourself with five or six laps to go at a restart and with your tyres virtually bald at a time when you need flat-out laps to keep heat in them.

“So you would really struggle off the line and it would be very tricky for us all to keep the cars pointing in the same direction off the start. It could cause mayhem.

“It would make for better television I’m sure, but there has to be a rule about the tyres, that maybe you have to pit, I don’t know. I like the idea in one way but it would be tricky for everyone if we were on very old tyres and it’s cold.”

I'm hoping Magnussen is kept on for another year, and not dropped like Perez was. His performance in Austria (amongst other events) was very good.

Agree Lew.

I don't think they'll drop him, he's a homegrown product from their scheme, like Lewis was, and he's delivering.

Ok Jenson, while they are at it, maybe they can bring in a new rule about not letting pussies drive??

I don't know why...but when I saw that cat I thought of Kvyat. Not in terms of driving ability, but facial expression. :scratchchin:

looking back through this thread it is very interesting to note how the true Mclaren fans have been correct on every single observation and prediction about how the team will restructure to stop the slide and become 'Ron style' again

'Button should be clearly better than Mag to stay'

'Button is a highly paid driver and should be doing much better despite the car'

'If top drivers like Lewis are available, we want them'
