Although the last race was not great on paper, with the olde enemy Williams ahead in the table and seemingly starting to get it together, there are signs that things are going to get much better next year.
In the race we saw the difference between a mediocre journeyman driver and a potential star driver. One driver has been mediocre his whole career and the only TP who saw fit to employ him after the double diffuser championship is not even deemed knowledgeable enough about F1 to even warrant oxygen in the pit lane anymore.
The other driver showed what the team could have going forward - Winning spirit. As opposed to cruise and collect which is fine for back grid teams but limits a team with ambition.
Buttons C&C pays off when drivers have problems and drop out mainly due to actually trying to race or to win.
In Austria we saw the limitations of this, when most cars finish, then the camera time and the points go to those drivers who move forward by fast driving and aggressive overtakes. Button is not a driver to be noticed in the race, or to be outperforming a car or wringing its neck, he just brings the car home and if cars drop out in front he gains.
Good thing is that we can be 100% certain that Eric B or Ron will not be giving him a new contract
the hierarchy believe Button is ‘a tenth or two’ short of the speed they want to help them escape the mediocrity of recent seasons.
Ron Dennis said after last Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix that they were ‘not looking to finalise our driver line-up now’ — hardly a ringing endorsement of Button.
