GPUpdate– McLaren's Jenson Button has said he has no plans to retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season.
Button endured another frustrating race in Spain last weekend coming home eleventh and just outside the points. It has led some to question whether or not he will want to stay on in the sport in 2015, but Button is adamant he doesn't want to hang up his helmet just yet.
"I definitely want to be in F1. This sort of season does not make you want to retire," he told the Press Assocation. "If you do retire, you want to retire on a high and if you have the possibility to do that, then you continue racing to get that high.
"The problem then is when you do that you don't want to stop racing either, so you could be racing for many years. But no, I don't feel I want to retire at the end of this year. I am happy about my future, and think it is quite exciting."
Button is now the second oldest driver on the grid having made his F1 debut back in 2000 with Williams. After winning the title in 2009 with Brawn GP, he switched to McLaren in 2010 and while both have enjoyed success together – including a number of wins – 2013 was bitterly disappointing and 2014 looks set to be tough too.
Button has admitted this creates something of a dilemma given he is now 34 and coming to the end of his time at the pinnacle of the sport.
"The biggest problem is I need to be in a car that is competitive, that gives you confidence as a driver as well. I hope that's here. It is a difficult decision for a driver in my position, with so much experience and so much to give. I'm at the point in my career where I've only a few years left where I will be in F1, and I want to be in a position where I can win races or be close to winning races," he explained.
"I would like to think I'll be here and the team will be competitive towards the end of this season, which will then give me good reason to want to be here," he added.
now he's like a gouty old woman.
