We talk a lot about regulations, and racing and whether or not F1 is the sort it used to be or whether it sounds like it used to or whatever... this type of advancement in technology only happens in Formula 1.

"Formula One is the pinnacle of automotive innovation. As such, it has a responsibility to push the boundaries of technology," added Wolff. "The new regulations not only encourage this innovation but also align the sport with the direction in which the automotive industry is heading. As a works manufacturer team, we are perfectly placed to reap the rewards of aligning our racing activities with the future technology path for series production.

“Formula One always has been about pure racing - and it still is today. At the same time, we're now back at the cutting edge of technology and pioneering new solutions. That's a huge positive step for the sport."

During the early development phases of KERS in 2007, a typical system weighed in at over 100 kg and worked at a thermal efficiency level of 39 percent. By the end of the 2012 season the units weighed just 24 kg and were capable of 80 percent thermal efficiency levels.

In other words, Formula One development enabled a 12-fold increase in power density from KERS systems, the impact of which has already filtered down into hybrid systems used by the everyday motorist.

Sometimes they make F1 sound like a slightly exciting test program? I'm sure spanky would argue, and he'd have a point, F1 shouldn't be just a technological testing ground, and that car manufacturers shouldn't rely on F1 to develop them.

Not all advancement comes from the bleeding edge, I agree. However there's a reason thoroughbreds and not clydesdales win the Kentucky Derby. F1 has the inherent framework for it and there's no way that level of advancement would have happened in the span of time it did otherwise.

That being the case, for sake of argument, there shouldn't be caps on budgets,
since we're looking at Research and Development!

wrote:">Hamilton and Rosberg trade barbs as tension rises

Growing tensions between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg bubbled up after the Briton claimed pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix.

The pair had a terse exchange in the press conference immediately after qualifying in Barcelona.

Rosberg had outperformed his Mercedes team-mate Hamilton in practice, but had to play second fiddle as the Briton produced a brilliant lap as time expired to nick pole.

The German, who has watched his British rival win the last three grands prix - finishing second each time - made no attempt to hide his frustration when asked how he felt.

"I'm very disappointed," said Rosberg. "I don't particularly enjoy coming second to Lewis."

Hamilton shot back: "We knew that already."

"Yeah, well, there we go, I'm just answering the question," Rosberg responded with a strained smile.

The pair enjoyed a cordial relationship during their first season at Mercedes, but their rivalry has grown during a 2014 season in which the team has completely dominated F1. Hamilton added:

"It's been a tough day. Nico was driving really well and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to get it but I eked out everything I could from the car. Coming here, we didn’t know where everyone was going to be, but to see all the hard work of the team really inspires me."

Rosberg responded:

"In the end, it was a good lap from me so Lewis just did a better job. It's still all to play for tomorrow. I'm a little bit away from optimum but it just takes a good start and I'm in the lead again."

Rosberg won the opening race in Australia as Hamilton retired, but Hamilton has hit back strongly, and Mercedes' refusal to impose team orders has produced some thrilling battles between the pair.

Barring retirements, they are widely expected to finish first and second - in some order - in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix.

Merc again making races worthwhile at the front despite the dominance.

I didn't really like the vibe from this race.

It's like German national pride is at stake or something, and with Lewis absolutely dominating, that's not a good mix.

I was hopeful Lewis would run off ten in a row, or something like that. The car is certainly capable of it, and so is Lewis. But I don't think that's likely now.

The car is so dominant, Mercedes can play games, if they want to, and they know it. The good thing is, after the McLaren debacle, they also know that the fan base is paying close attention as well, and they may not want the negative publicity that comes with team favoritism, like we saw at McLaren and Red Bull, over the last few years.

Has any elite, absolutely top-tier driver ever had to deal with his own team's shenanigans throughout his whole career?

Conspiracy theories from the front of the grid.

From within the team, no?

Mercedes are winning far too easily, clearly they are cheating in some way... flexing front wing, coating their tyres with glue... there has to be something, surely?:wink:
