I don't see how he would compare Button to one of the greatest
drivers of all time, if he didn't actually believe what he's saying.
Meaning Jenson went to McLaren and quickly had the engineers following him and his direction, because... well because he's such a likeable guy. The only wrinkle is they followed him to their worst season in 33 year. I'm confident both Jenson and McLaren will do better this year.
I'm still firmly in the belief that the bad season was MW's fault and not button as people like to try and make out.
I'd agree with that to a certain extent. Martin was the boss, the buck should stop with him, and things awry underneath him are due to his inability to manage people and situations. But do you not think button bears some responsibility for leading the team in the wrong direction and for exploiting the TP's failings?
Its not Buttons fault for being allowed to take on a role and responsibility that turned out much bigger than he was ready for. He has skills at getting along in a team where there is little pressure and everyone gets on and its a very forgiving environment, all happy campers and team building exercises. But at teams like Ferrari and McLaren there is much more required from the team leader especially when on track direction is required.
It was said that Ferrari were eager for Buttons services and maybe he could have been more effective as a leader there, although I would say Alonso maybe slightly edges it in that sense, like we have seen in the last few years when he always provided a hope of results no matter how bad the car was and would have been very demanding behind the scenes instead of becoming part of the despair.
So Ferrari might have been a perfect fit for Buttons skills as team leader, however at McLaren with its clinical crystal clear focus and attention on detail and ruthless determination, maybe Buttons leadership did not fit with the corporate style that had done well over decades. Its hard to say any drivers style of leadership works for every team and maybe if McLaren had a different ethos Buttons leadership would not have ended in the worst season for 33 years. Maybe his leadership works better at the types of team he was at before McLaren where he had a lot of time and space to drag them to the front of the grid.
