I think you're spot on with that Jab, and as his Bromance with Lewis will only last as long as Lewis serves a purpose, so mine with Lauda will only last the same length.

Yup, Lauda is making a lot of sense right now and showing his spirit, possibly inspired by finally having another spirited driver like himself to look after

He could revert to a cantankerous bigot out of frustration when that ends

However for now he talks sense and is a good chap for Lewis to have onside

Maybe even if Lewis moves on from Merc one day Lauda will follow him, like Paddy

There seems to be a general sense of excitement and optimism for the 2014 season at Mercedes. It's clear there is only one goal.

It has the air of a popular revolution with very clear and noble aims

Viva la revolution!!

Lauda talks a bit more about next years packages and says getting oil and water temperatures exactly right will be crucial, otherwise everything will stop. He says they're in a good position and being able to do the car and engine together is advantageous.

And he thinks Mercedes and Renault, each with three non-works customer teams, have a slight advantage over Ferrari, who are only supplying customer engines to Sauber and Marussia in 2014.

"Four teams is four sources of information," said Lauda. "Everyone is having their individual problems, so we can learn faster and respond sooner."

Renault may not have Lotus, and with their 'works' team RBR not having an integrated chassis/power train development team, Merc on paper are best placed to develop and evolve through the early pre freeze stage. When you add the massive catch up they did last Winter, things look exactly like they were sold to Lewis when he joined. 2013 was just a warm up

Or it could slow down development as they have to look into everyone's needs.

I think you misunderstood. The basic engine layout is going to be custom built for the Mercedes W05 chassis, but Lauda is referring to the trouble shooting process and the gremlins which the customer teams will feed back to Mercedes. The basic pneumatic systems/moving parts won't really be tweaked much, though the software management system (that article which WB posted) is what will determine the progress of the engines through the season...especially after the freeze.

I don't think Mercedes are brain dead enough to slow down their own development in order to make everyone else happy first. F1 is much too selfish to work that way, take what you get or shove off is the normal policy. :)

I get that the engine type will get a lot more miles in (which is a good thing). However I am sure some issues will just be the relationship of the installation in the chassis. So Mercedes (Engines) might get caught out trying to sort a niggle out that might be more chassis (team) based than engine based

hammer is correct here I believe. Its not about the Merc powertrain team helping the customers integrate the engines, they have to do that for each customer.
Its more about the Merc chassis team learning from the Merc powertrain team about the various issues from 4 customer teams and being able to use all that extra data on their own car for troubleshooting etc. Powerful advantage for the Merc chassis team and ofcourse they dont have to help anyone but themselves, contrast this to McLarens chassis team, they will only have data on their own issues plus help from Merc powertrain team and so slower problem solving etc

Ah ok. I see what you mean. Mercedes (Chassis) can take the best solution from the other teams if they have not got it right themselves.

Whereas the customer teams can only see their own solution.

Yeah say there are 4 different solutions for placing the cooling for the ERS-H, and each team has done one of them. Then Merc Chassis team will know the pros and cons of each whereas each team will only know about 1. If Merc chassis has to change its own or optimise it further it can use all the data. Whereas the powertrain guys working with each of the customer teams is only obliged to help them with there own specific solution.
So Merc chassis will indirectly have data of the solutions of engineers from McLaren, Force India and Williams, whereas Ferrari only have insight into the engineers at Marrussia and Sauber
RBR chassis could have the same from Renault customers but as the chassis and powertrain teams are seperate, plus the Renault powertrain guys have to spread the love amongst the other customers, Merc chassis should have a massive advantage on early evolution, optimisation and problem solving

BOOM!

2014 LAUNCH DATE REVEALED

The Silver Arrows have announced that they will be launching their new car on January 28th, the start of the first pre-season test in Jerez.

The Mercedes team have decided to launch the car at the test, rather than in a separate event. This was first tweeted to a fan, and then confirmed in an interview with ESPN. The only other team to give clues to their launch is Lotus, who have announced that they will not be taking part in the first test, and will launch before the second test in Bahrain.

The 2014 season will see the introduction of several new rules, which will see a big change to the look of the cars. With new engines, or ‘power-trains’, the teams will be looking to get the most out of the new regulations. As well as the new technical rules drivers will be allowed to choose their own number for their car, as long as it is between 2-99. Nico Rosberg has expressed that he would like either #6, #5 or #8, while Lewis Hamilton is yet to release his new number.
