Well, there are many more factors involved in developing a car than just the driver. As you know, mclarens technical staff has been leaving the team, and they took a radical departure from their competitive 2012 car. Maybe Jenson had some input in that decision, maybe not. So without any knowledge of how development has been done at McLaren the last few years, I'd defer to someone with first-hand knowledge. Could whitmarsh be biased? Or just parroting the party line? Of course. Do I think someone under that much scrutiny could continually cover for a driver who isn't worth the salary? No.
Yes, Perez has been doing better than Jenson lately, and if broken down to a simple points per salary calculation, Perez would have a much higher bang for the buck. I'll even go as far as to say that it does seem a little weird, but I'm not going to presume to know more about the value of drivers than the team principal or the investors he has to answer to.
