Magnussen and Pérez doesn't exactly sound like a great combination for 2014, though. Maybe Magnussen and The Hulk, but more likely if they were going to take Magnussen then they'd end up keeping Button around, at least for a year.

Yes, put Kevin in the car! See how he goes. They need a new star! They're touting round all the other teams to get him a drive...put him in the McLaren!!

But is he good looking enough to disturb Whitmarsh?

If 2015 is the big turnaround, they are targeting proven drivers like Alonso, they wont keep Button or they would have snapped him up longterm by now. Therefore 2014 is by far the best chance to trial young drivers. Why not have Perez lead Kevin in this 'gap' year. Grosjean has come good, Perez + Kevin would not have results far from Button + Perez in a transition year where the chances are the car will be weaker than this year.

Hmmmm. Good point. Kevin isn't good looking. He's doomed at McLaren.

Based on what evidence? Button's results have been better than those that Pérez has pulled in this year and the latter hasn't shown many signs of improvement throughout the course of the year. Assuming it takes Magnussen a year to get to grips with F1, that puts McLaren in a dangerous position for next year. Finishing 5th this year will hurt them. Finishing lower than next year will hurt even more. If they're looking for new talent, it would make far more sense to stick with Button and replace Pérez for 2014, then replace Button for 2015 with a better driver, if they can get one. You have to remember that there's also a chance that McLaren will pull out the best car next year, or at least one capable of challenging for titles (I still expect Red Bull to lead the field), in which case it would probably be better to have a proven race winner and a young driver, than to have two young drivers who haven't been in that position before.

Based on the evidence that the car will get worse before it gets better. Based on the team have lost talent and are only looking to replace them in 2015, they are also using an engine for 1 year only before switching to a brand new engine and therefore design and packaging philosophy

How can they improve on 2013 in 2014 with those salient facts? The same group of individuals who have produced McLarens statistically worst season ever http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1804295-statistics-on-mclarens-season-is-it-the-teams-worst-in-f1 are not changing till 2015. There is already evidence they have weight issues for 2014. Therefore the team would be smart to put all efforts towards a rebirth in 2015, and not something stupid like they did this year - redesign for 1 season only.

So best to blood the young talent now, Perez could have scored the points Button did this season if Button had not been there, he has been right behind him, apart from team strategies and team orders and a few exuberancies. If he became team leader I have no doubt he would score as many points as Button would

Whitmarsh might be trying to secure this guy, he's had some experience in a Redbull.

Surley he will get released from the contract before then. Redbull are not going to want him looking at their 2015 car

Well if they are sensible, they just put him on gardening leave. Where theoretically he wont be able to work for McLaren, and he wont see any of their 2015 car...?

Isn't it odd in this sport that there are people talking on a forum about this random guy moving company and going on garden leave. It's bizarre.

What I find odd is the need to speculate!!
This is worse than watching a soap opera!! :whip:

Aren't the news regs less reliant upon Aero, and more about power train....?

This is Whitmarshs McLaren we are talking about. Anyway there's not much they can do about the engine and they must make Honda feel they are proactively trying to improve the team

Anyone notice how Sauber suddenly improve massively after getting rid of their designer

to McLaren
