Bernie Ecclestone says the Indian Grand Prix is likely to be dropped in 2014....
F1 boss says reasons for dropping race are "very political"

Bernie Ecclestone says the Indian Grand Prix is likely to be dropped from the schedule next year, despite its contract running until 2015.

New races are planned in New Jersey and Russia, whilst Red Bull confirmed last week that the Austrian GP will return for the first time since 2003.

Added to the existing calendar, those events would swell the calendar to 22 races, but the teams are keen to ensure there are no more than 20 grands prix.

"Is India going to happen next year? Probably not," Ecclestone said. When pressed for a reason why he added: "Very political."

However, despite Ecclestone's comments race promoters Japyee Sports are keen for the grand prix to continue until at least 2015.

"We have not got anything in writing from the Formula One management regarding the status of the 2014 Indian Grand Prix," Jaypee spokesman Askari Zaidi said.

"We are keen that Formula 1 races take place in India at the Buddh International Circuit until our contract is in operation that is 2015."

One Team Principal keen to see the race remain on the calendar is Sauber's India-born chief Monisha Kaltenborn.

"It would be a pity if for these (tax) reasons we don't go there," she said.

"India is an important market for partners who are already in Formula 1 or who could get into Formula 1 because of that market so it really would be a pity if we would not manage to sort out these problems."

Ahh who gives a sh!t.

Love the fact that a European circuit is coming in, and one of the lifeless newer ones is on the way out.

I hope it happens.

Not really the most exciting layout anyway....but could you take Valencia and Barcelona with you please? Thank you.

By political do they mean "We realised it looks bad that we're holding a multi million dollar sport in an impovrished nation, where all the grandstands are empty even though the tickets cost £12, that's more than a yearly salary for 95% of people"?

Terrible layout. The corner entries are massive, then they become so narrow that it makes overtaking harder. I will not be sad to see it go, especially if it puts Austria back on the calendar as a result.

Can someone remind me what the tax reasons are again? Sounds like laws were changed to tax events like this and specifically F1. Isn't a wise thing to do but that is what would make the whole thing political.

It would be a shame to lose the race in India, keep it more of a world sport with followers everywhere. At least they now seem to have it in Russia.

Some of the EU events seem like sleepers.

He's actually one of the better world leaders. At least he wasn't born with a silver spoon up :censored: .

I reckon if there was a royal rumble with all world leaders he'd win! :hehe:

I thought I remembered the races there being fairly entertaining...

To paraphrase a wise one's comment in another thread:

If one's favourite driver was successful on a track, said track was amazing; however,
if favourite driver does poorly on a track, that track was not any good.

Amazing how one's perspective changes dependant upon their preferences! :D

Indian GP is definitely off the calendar in 2014, which is a pity because I thought that the rack was interesting. It will be back in 2015, but reportedly much earlier in the year. Maybe after Malaysia.
