"We" as in McLaren as a whole. Jenson is viewing himself as part of the team, not as a separate party.

Maybe he's cementing his future with the team as Whitmarsh's successor.

But 'we' did it in 2009 doesn't work then because Mclaren and Jenson were not a 'we' in 2009

Hmmmmm, perhaps that's where he's angling to get!!!

It's not "we" as in McLaren and I, it's "we" as in McLaren. Don't view them as two parties, but one. Jenson specifically doesn't have to have been a part of it then; I say "we" won WWII; what I mean is that the Allies won WWII. I wasn't even around then, but I'm now part of a nation that was part of that winning force.

But that still doesn't work because Mclaren didnt win In 2009, Brawn did.Button is now part of something different to the thing that won in 2009. He's change sides if you like.

Usual McLaren talk for the sponsors, they are now apparently targeting a podium at Spa. Its a rebbot of the season, they have learnt from mistakes, they are convinced they wont make any next year, and they reckon they have gained something out of this years disaster - they have learnt new lessons. So its almost like its a good season for them

They should be more like Merc and instead of cheap talk and soundbites, why not surprise us on track instead of telling us about the latest reboot?

They are in a comfortable place, not at the sharp end and no need to explain not winning. So they can continue with the learning curve without pressure while the big boys compete at the front

Hmm, re-reading the quote, it does look more like it could be a reference to the Honda/Brawn situation as you mentioned (which wasn't just a case of exploiting a loophole, by the way) and even that's relevant because it's an example of being able to go from bad to good. Of course, they can also stay bad... Looking at you, Minardi!

Either way, both teams demonstrated the ability to move forward, just that one was during a season, the other in-between.

Edit: ^ They wouldn't be doing very well with the sponsors if they said "it's all terrible", though, would they? :P

Podium in Spa....so they're going to pay Grosjean to take out half the field again? Even then, I doubt it.

Hmm i think its pretty clear him referring to "we" as in McLaren's form swing in 2009.
Him not being there is irrelevant to his referencing himself as part of the team.

Minardi had its place in the sport. Something that F1 seems to have forgotten recently

How can he be referencing a time of achievement when he wasn't even a part of that achievement??

"We" referencing McLaren, his team (which he is now apart of) did "it" in 2009.

"I"did" it" or "They" did "it" were not mentioned.

In my job when referencing work done previous to my employment I use the term "we"
For example "we did this logo for so and so in 2004"
I don't see an issue with that.
