The other thing that would shoot down their argument and actually incur the wrath of the FiA is that Mercedes didn't ask for the test it was a Pirelli test, a test because of a safety issue. The fact that the new car was used is why RB and Ferrari have the stick up their bum. A team can test whenever they want with a two year old car. This Merc test wasn't Mercedes testing on their own and then deciding the use a new car.

The difference in a team choosing now to forgo the YDT and doing something on their own and using a new car, would get them legally banned for the season. Any court would only come to that conclusion.

This is just a way for these teams to show how butt hurt they are, and it makes them look like 12 year old girls for doing it. But that's F1.

Ah no it wasn't. If it was a safety issue the agreements have clauses stating that Pirelli can run tests and change the tyres if there is a safety issue regardless of if all teams agree; which they can't do because it's a PR issue and not a safety issue; and we never would of had this entire tribunal.

so says you. the tires were delaminating, that's not a safety issue in your opinion. we saw them what five times during two or three races? when it happens at 180 mph, you tell me it's a PR issue.

But during the tribunal the two new pieces of evidence were

1. A letter from the GPDA signed by Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Pedro De La Rosa stating that the felt that the tires were dangerous

2. An E mail from Charlie Whiting to Paul Hemperby (Gaylord) Telling him to make sure that the tires Pirelli take to Canada are safe !

I guess the question I would have, if this were true, why would they say they spent 90% of their time testing 2014 tires if they were trying to make the 2013 tire safe? ...... gotcha

^^ the Pirelli statement (believe what you will) said they didn't spend a lot of time testing because after Monaco, they could not get a consensus to change the tire back to a kevlar tread casing since that would have wiped out Lotus, Sauber's and FI's advantage and would never be approved, so they tested only the redesign with the new beefed up construction (I think on the medium tire) which was the culprit and left it at that, because they'd be able to get that changed without the consent off all of the teams.

Seems like a reasonable explanation, yes? I think Pirelli understands that a dead F1 driver would be the biggest PR mess of all.

"If" you're trying to justify the test based on making this year's tire "safe" then I think its a fail. Pirelli have at various times stated they only tested the 2014 tire, or they tested 2013 tires 10% of the time. There's no way you can spin that story (that you are testing for safety reasons) to stand when you're not running on the 2013 tire.

Monaco and what happened after are extraneous because they occurred after the test and therefore couldn't have been in the considerations of whether to conduct the test.

We saw Massa go through a few tires, and Lewis' car get shredded up by another one. is it a coincidence that they used both Ferrari and Mercedes to tire test? If we don't see it happen again, then they got on top of whatever was causing it without having to revert to back to the kevlar belted tires of last year.

The argument about whether the '13 tire is safe or not is not what I was commenting on. We can talk about delams this year and previous years, but again that's not the point.

My point, very simply is there is no way you can "spin" the tire test Merc did as in any way being conducted to address safety issues of the 2013 tire. It can't have been because, by Merc and Pirelli's own admissions they barely used the 2013 tire. So whatever the purpose of the Barcelona test, it was most definitely not to address the safety of the 13 tire

I've also been thinking alot about the penalty imposed on Merc - missing the YDT. I've come to the conclusion that most people are downplaying this penalty far too much. I'm thinking it is a very significant penalty. Even more, I think Merc will really loose ground to the other teams because they have to sit on the sidelines and not participate.

Yep, keep telling yourself that spanky. That's why Mercedes themselves suggested for this self-penalty, and Redbull are actually planning to 'boycott' the YDT....since it's so significant in development.
