I'm guessing by some people's reasoning that Old Man Schumi came back to the sport in order to just drive around and get beaten by his teammate 3 years in a row, since "only Mika worried him".

Here's a picture of part of the Mercedes at the back. I'm not sure what it is, or if its good or bad, so if anyone knows can they tell me please? :)

The stuff that looks like cardboard? It'll just be a heat resistant material (so they don't burn parts of the bodywork by accident).

But what's a strake? They're on about a floor strake. I thought it said stake at first.

The strake in that image is the black bit. Although you don't get to see it too well in that shot because its from above so you don't see its height etc. Put simply a strake is supposed to improve airflow for a better aero effect.

Thanks Spanky. They're using that vis flow paint today, so maybe that's what they're working on.

Either that or they've got some excess flow viz and want to look busy :)
For what it's worth, from the little I've seen of the Merc it looks very tidy on the track. I don't pay much attention to the times, but I think their car will be competitive this year and, I'd think they will be quietly thinking about notching up wins this year.

Barcelona provides plenty of different types of corners,a good car should be fast, they look much better than they did in Jerez.

This quote says in all about the progress

'Rosberg set a 1:23.005 on what what have been the soft tyre in Q3 here last May, whereas his time yesterday was 1:22.616 on the mediums. He would have had unrestricted access to DRS on his 2012 qualy lap, so that would appear to point to progress, but the variables and the fact everyone would have improved over the subsequent nine months and the softer tyres still make direct comparisons difficult.'

:D:D that's excellent news, hope you're right. Nico seems very pleased with it and can feel a big difference to last year.. Fingers crossed!

That kindov goes with their colour scheme...maybe they're experimenting with streamlining the paintjob :D

Could be Lewis was not content with just changing the stickers on the car but has also directed the team to change the paint job to make the car faster :hehe:

Despite some other top drivers suggesting it would be wrong to discount Hamilton as a title threat despite his move to the hitherto troubled Mercedes team, Hamilton is standing by his belief that he is unlikely to even win a race this season.

Asked by AUTOSPORT whether his scepticism meant he rated his victory chances as impossible or merely unlikely, Hamilton replied: "It doesn't mean it's impossible, but I think people are talking us up at the moment.

"[Sebastian] Vettel and maybe Fernando [Alonso] were saying I'm maybe going to be competing for the world championship, but I really don't see that happening at the moment.

"Of course that's our goal but you've got to remember the car was over a second off, sometimes two seconds off, last year and we've not caught a second up.

"And other teams will have put a second on over the winter. So we've not gained three seconds, that's a fact.

"Hopefully by the end of the year, that's our goal, but definitely not at the beginning."

Hamilton believes Mercedes' W04 currently holds a respectable position just behind the absolute frontrunners.

"It's a work in progress. We have stuff to add to it, stuff to work on, things that are better than what I have experienced, things that are not as good," he said.

"Downforce is not great but we have some updates. It's probably not fast enough to be the quickest but it's not slow, that's for sure."

He also remains adamant that Mercedes will thrive in the long term as recent changes take effect.

"I don't think there should be a reason not to succeed," Hamilton said.

"I think sometimes people lose their way and it takes a group of people to try and put the train back on its tracks. We've got lots of great people here who I think have been doing that and we're now rolling in the right direction."

Purposefully playing down chances there (as many are doing to be fair). I don't think Mercedes will be THAT far off the pace as he suggests, although that will obviously vary track by track. I have been surprised by Mercedes this week in testing, personally.

My 'Mercedes hunch' for the season is that they'll be sodding quick at Monaco again.

Lewis seems to be having more involvement with making the car truly great at Merc than he did at McLaren. Seems like he is identifying 2 distinct philosophies of what constitutes success

The Brit, though, did acknowledge that Mercedes could be in a winning position should the rain come down. However, Hamilton says he would rather win on merit than in a lottery.

"When it rains, it definitely makes it more of a lottery. We're working towards being quick in the dry.

"We don't want to have these days gifted to us where some people fall off and we happen to overtake them through luck.

Maybe if engineers like Paddy Lowe feel the same, they would want to follow Lewis to Merc, just like MS moving to Ferrari led to Benneton engineers following him shortly afterwards
