- 25 Oct 12, 05:56#329482McLaren hopes to shave at least one tenth of a second off its car’s pace at each of the remaining four races in the 2012 Formula 1 season. With a maximum of 172 constructors’ points left on offer, the Woking team has fallen to third place behind Ferrari and now trails the leading Red Bull by 83.
“It’s not a big a decision to decide to continuing developing the 2012 car,” Sporting Director Sam Michael told the official F1 website during the latest Vodafone phone-in. “The rule changes for next year are quite small compared to what they would be in normal years, so most of the development work we do on this car will carry over to 2013 anyway. We’re going to push to the end.”
Going on to discuss the rate of development, the Australian continued:
“Basically, if you’re not bringing typically 0.1 or 0.15 seconds on average to every Grand Prix, you’re not going to stay competitive; and anything you bring above that on average you should start pulling away, or making up ground on your main competitors. The thing is that the gaps are very small now and it only takes one or two tenths to swing things from one way to another.”
After the forthcoming back-to-back events in India and Abu Dhabi, there will be just one more free weekend before the USA and Brazil bring the curtain down on 2012.
