It does help that Ferrari doesn't have a titanium axle which can easily be cross-threaded.

Any screw device can easily be cross-threaded, can they not?

Easier with a soft aluminuminum nut going onto a hard titanium screw.

I thought the idea of the titanium axle and aluminum nut was so that *if* they got cross-threaded, only the nut would get damaged - not the expensive, hard to replace axle.

Do ferrari not use titanium axles and aluminum nuts? I thought the nuts were just embedded into the wheel somehow, making it easier for the pit crew to line them up.

I think that's the idea though it does mean it's easier to damage the nut and I think it's only Mclaren. During the tyre change the nut comes off and is held in the end of the gun.

Yeah the nut is captive on the wheel these days. Another thing to speed up the process. It's already around the axle, almost on the threaded section, probably touching it, then the gun is supposed to just turn it on the threads. The theory was that the chance of cross threading should be reduced. Still not impossible though.

I thought Mclaren weren't doing that because of the problems with their aluminuminum nut more prone to cross threading. It could be an even bigger problem for the teams that do if they have a damaged nut though less likely. Easier to have a spare nut ready than to have to change the entire set of wheels just because one nut failed.

Does it have to be screw fit? could you not use a door latch type affair?

Thing is we have seen other teams with problems with the left rear, Sauber just at the weekend in Spain. I think its not just the nut or axle if its affecting other teams left rear also. obviously these tyres might be causing issues.

About Mclaren not bringing a new front wing for button but one for lewis in spain? Some lad from work is saying Lewis had a newer wing than Button but i think hes just a Jenson fan in denial

Both cars clearly had new noses, very easy to tell by the on board camera shots. What I believe has been said is they only brought one SPARE new nose.
