Why is everybody taking Australia as if there's only one race to go until the end of the season?



It's race ONE of NINETEEN! So much can happen over the course of the season! A smart man would'nt make a bet for Button to win the title just because he won in Oz. There's so many 'what ifs' to come from that race that one can not judge the entire season on a race like that.

What if Hamilton got a better start than Button? Would Button have been able to catch and pass Hamilton?
What if Hamilton came out in front of Perez after the first pit stops? Would he have kept his 4 second gap behind Button and later caught him?
What if there was no Safety Car? Would Vettel have caught and passed Hamilton?

Yes, it's true that the race winner from Melbourne has often gone on to take the title, but what if there was a major fluke and someone like Bruno Senna had won in Oz? Would everyone be tipping him for the 2012 WDC? Having said that, having the Senna name back up in the mix would be pretty awesome!

It's not just that he merely won, but the way in which he did it. He dominated. His pace was clearly much better than anyone else's - even Lewis'. And if we're to believe McLaren, they even have more pace up their sleeve because they under-calculated the fuel in Melbourne.

One more statistic for a Melbourne winner...DC won it in 2003 I believe...and that was the last race he won in 2003.

Oh, and Kimi came 3rd that race...and went on to challenge for the WDC until the final race.

One more little-known statistic... in 2011, Sebastian Vettel won the Australian GP, and went on to dominate the rest of the season.

Where'd you find that little nugget of F1 folk lore?

You might want to watch replay. Hamilton was behind Button by 3 - 3.5 seconds and that gap stayed the same until the PITSTOPS. Hamilton came out just behind Perez who slowed him down by another 6-7 seconds, and then it was 11 seconds when he passed him. The gap merely maintained.

I'm surprised it maintained, it basically meant Button was as fast as Hamilton, and a little bit faster when the lights went out. Which isn't a normal thing. And I'm pretty sure Malaysia will show us why...

Lol take it easy...I'm just pointing out that statistics and the mumbo jumbo means squat. You don't have to take it personally, I'm sure Button will win another race or two this season.

You're right about statistics....but I kinda like this one....

Out of the last 16 Australian GPs in Melbourne the pole sitter has gone on to win the championship 14 times (87.5%) and the race winner has gone on to win the championship 11 times (68.75%).

Well, it's just all the excitement over the off season spilled over into Race 1, and people think the winner is sure to do great things.

Let's not forget Lewis talking about 'tyres being key to the race win' at the press conference before the race. Clearly underestimated them and went for a setup which was more conservative. With a much better bearing on things now, we should see the real Lewis starting to appear in Malaysia.

I have been thinking about the GP for most of the week and I have concluded that Button won the race fair and square, all the Lewis fanboys out there can not go on about how Button was lucky with his tyres or stratergy because of the weather. The better man on the day won.

I thought I was a Hamilton fanboy, yet that was my assesment post race. I didn't have to think about it all weekend! Now you've gone and made me question whether I'm a fanboy or not.

I dont think luck had anything to do with Jensons win (doesnt mean Im not pissed off about it )Lewis lost it at the start. After that bad luck made his race worse-not getting in when his tyres were gone and dropping 4secs a lap, getting stuck behind two slower cars and dropping another 5 and then the safety car. But that was lewis' bad luck not Jensons good luck.

Heavens above. I'm so glad I don't take F1 as seriously as you guys.

I really enjoyed the race and well done to Button for winning. After the safety car I really thought we would see a serious battle for the win but he kept his cool well. Felt sorry for Maldonado but them's the breaks. I'm sure he'll get many points during the season cause that Williams looks impressive.
