F1 : Paul Pietsch - Oldest former Formula 1 driver from Germany turns 100
Monday, 20 June 2011 09:30

Paul Pietsch on Monday becomes the only living former Formula One driver with a three digit age.

The German, born on 20 June 1911, drove Alfa Romeos and Maseratis in the modern World Championship's earliest years, failing to win a race or even score a point.

But he is also remembered for founding the authoritative magazine Auto Motor und Sport, and in his more recent years for refusing to use a walking stick or a hearing aid because they are "for old people".

Ironically as a 100 year old now, Pietsch's nickname was 'Rennbaby' (baby racer), due to his spending much of his earlier career as the youngest in the field.

When his career stalled due to flagging finances, he founded a publishing company in a bid to get back on track.

"I wanted to race again. We had to get the funding somehow, by selling something. I said to myself that I could sell my knowledge about motor racing," he told the FAZ newspaper.

I would appear that our very own SennaVille turned the big "Four Oh" today. Feliz Cumpleaños.

Gosh! I missed this thread. Thank you sooo much for bringing this to everyone's attention, WB! You're a pal!

myownalias, I'm a Brit who lived in the US for years and is now back in the UK. I told a co-worker to just give a kid his paccy the other day *blank stare*. I also have to stop myself from saying chips for crisps, diapers for nappies, and I still pronounce it skedule not schedule. Plus, getting back on english date format is hellish. It took me about fourteen years to get used to the american format of mm/dd/yyyy, now I have to whiplash and go back to dd/mm/yyyy.

Whenever I'm asked my date of birth, there is a very long pause :banghead:

Dang nobody wished me a happy b-day :( , I guess it's a love/hate relationship :hehe: . Actually as you get older atleast imo your b-days are more enjoyable simply for the fact you know you made it another year so you appreciate them more. Also you don't spend them getting totally pissed in some bar/pub all night anywho thats just this old geezer's outlook.

This birthday was the first in over 5yr's that I actually had people to enjoy it with instead of watching the fireworks on tv and we did not get really drunk until we were back home on the patio safe and sound.

Happy belated to DD and WB :drink: !!
