Opinion:
Five things we've learned from the first three races:

1. Vettel and Red Bull have really raised their game

2. Managing your tyre allocation is hugely important

3. CURSE is important at the start but adds little to the show

4. DRS has increased overtaking, but can make it too easy

5. Red Bull are ahead of the rest in the pit stop war




I changed the title of the thread to 'four' races because, IMHO, all five points were only further reinforced in race #4.

Sorry, not gonna type in all their reasoning, too. For the most part, it's obvious. If you're that interested, pick up your own copy at the newsmonger's.

I heard a statistic by the SPEED team during the Turkey telecast that before Lewis' extended stop because of the wheel nut, that it was actually McLaren that had the lowest mean time in the pits.

No argument on any of the other points though.

Ok my observations would be
1. Vettel has raised his game subject to Webber. Red Bull, not really, only in quali.
2.Sadly yes managing tyres is more important than racing.
3. KERS, well cant tell how much effect its having with all the other artificial aids and the fragile tyres.
4.Overtaking is no longer a skill (another sad thing)Unless you pull one off outside the DRS zone
5.Red Bull were ahead in the pitstop war at the beginning of the season. It's quite close unless someone makes a gaffe.
6.The best drivers are still scoring more points.
7. Schumi is out of his depth
8. Exciting races arent everything
9. F1 is becoming an endurance race.
10. Lewis is Amazing ( i was restrained there!!)

1) Pirelli's have contributed 90%+ to the increase in overtakes we are seeing

2) DRS has concentrated most overtakes into bland indefensible moves at one spot on the track (excluding lapped/slow cars).

3) DRS doesn't work when similar cars are on similar rubber (e.g. Felipe/Jenson/Australia) - so in itself its a stupid gimmick

4) The WDC this year will go to either Seb, Lewis or Nando.

5) KERS is a wasteful gimmick

And because of that, we're clearly seeing who can overtake and who simply waits for the DRS zone.

Come on Spanky, you should know when your beat in regards to your flagging hardline stance on the DRS.


1. Tyre wear is EVERYTHING this year, vettel was only topped by Hamilton cause Hamilton saved an extra fresh set of options!

Infact its so important some teams ( sauber, possibly even ferrari/mercedes) could just skip q3, possibly even q2 just to save two sets of options, kobayashi started dead last in a midfield runner and finished in the points despite also taking a puncture from buemi!


2. DRS is a good idea, a great idea. Only in turkey was the allocated zone a bit too much, but we still saw plenty of late braking fights into turn (12?).

3. Vettel is as good as last year, hes car i too, only its also reliable as a nuclear alarm clock.

4. Schumacher needs to graciously finish his career after this year

5. If no top teams are looking at Kobayashi as a future prospect, they need medical treatment.

While DRS and KERS are somewhat bandaiding the real problem of to much reliance on aero grip, they do improve the show. Passig with the use of car mounted heat seeking missiles would be better than the procession of no possible overtakes we have seen in the past. I admit to falling asleep multiple times during races in the last several years...but not this year.

I'm all for the latest rules. F1, being the pinnacle of motorsport, has always had all sorts of technical innovations designed to make cars faster / to improve the show. These are no different. We've seen 4 excellent races so far. People cry out for more overtaking and then moan when they get it. OMG....

1) GP ticket prices are priced all over the place!

2) Modern F1 cars are crazy reliable, it seems like we've had such few mechanical retirements. Especially amongst the top teams.

3) Artificial or not, the racing has been better even if I can't keep track of all the actions with the amount of pit stops and different tire strategies.

4) Kobayashi is the most matured rookie from last year. I will follow his career in F1 (even if he joins the dark side)

5) Sebastian Vettel would have been 25 points further away had Bahrain taken place.

2, SV has turned up the pressure.

3, The new teams have not moved as far forward as they said they would.

4, Schuey is not a happy man

One of the additional sub-points they listed to be learned from the first three races was that HRT and Virgin still suck.

So ten laps from finish, strip the lad naked and put him in the tub!
