Pirelli tyre wear 'quite big' - Kubica

"Let's say they have quite big degradation so it will be very important to manage them better and maybe change a bit of the set-up in order to make them last longer and extract more performance from them."

"Feeling wise it's not perfect, actually feeling wise it's not so good. But on the other hand Valencia is a very different track to the others and often the cars are not behaving right here but they are behaving much better on the grand prix tracks. So I hope this will be the case and we won't have to worry too much about today's feeling. "

All sounds good, maybe we'll see different teams or drivers going different directions with setup/strategy. Everyone's got the same tyre options so what's there to complain about?

I dont see the big deal here.

Fans who follow know what's going on.

Casual observers...for examply myself when I watched 10 laps of Nascar this one sad lonely time in my life, I barely cared about the tyres. I cared more about the crashes, speed, the number of ridiculous colours they use on one car.

Pirelli are smart. F1 is marketed as the 'pinnacle of motorsports'. If people believe the pinnacle would use a lousy tyre manufacturer, well, they aren't so 'pinnacle' anymore are they?

Considering Pirelli's F1 history and the short time they have had I think they are doing ok and they will also be able to develope the tires throughout the season. Maybe this season will have unforseen issues but next season should be alot better.

Something else occurs to me. Bridgestone's task was easier because they didn't have to find any sort of "balance" between too much tyre life and too little.

So Pirelli have been asked to make their tyres expire more quickly. Now there exists the possibility that, if they get it wrong, tyre life could easily cause some drivers to have to pit for tyres, not twice, but three times. Imagine the hue and cry if a sentimental favorite driver Alonso who clearly is faster and clearly the more aggressive should lose the victory to a slower driver who has better seen to his tyres.

I can envision a team like RBR, whose cars are famously easy on tyres, or even those drivers known to be easy on the rubber (like JB) could drive a pace calculated to just knacker their third set of rubber by race end. In theory, they could drive a 20+ second slower race and still win over any team that can't manage their tyres so well.

I'm fair certain you'll see cars from some of the top teams requiring four sets of tyres to finish at least some of the races this season (and it will be interesting to witness the fans' reactions to that development). But Pirelli have taken insurance against that happening, at least for the first few races. They have announced they are bringing hard and soft compound tyres to the first four events, leaving the supersofts and the intermediates in the van. In terms of their accelerated tyre wear, this affords them the largest margin for error and gives them four races to evaluate their performance in the "heat of battle."

Making tyre management the key to victory. Wow, what a concept!

Yeah..and it doesn't really contribute to saving costs or the environment now does it!! Unless someone's hired to go out on track and scrape out all the burnt rubber and 'marbles' and recycle them into new tyres...and other assorted accessories made of rubber. :)

All those considerations on degredation and driving styles, will, in my opinion, add to the excitement of the season. You make your own luck in motorsport, by working harder and smarter than the others.

Everyone has the same tyres, and same opportunities to get it right or wrong.

The cream will still always rise to the top.......

Vettel is reporting that the Pirellis marble so badly, they limit off-line braking enough to cancel the benefit of the MRW.

:yikes: Who else will he be harpooning?

Well maybe if so many drivers didn't munch their tyres like a Quarter Pounder with Cheese Meal :whistling:

Soft Tyres will always create more marbles, in any category. It part of the deal when using stickier rubber....

I feel enough cars will be using the MRV further down the grid during races to keep the overtaking points on the track relatively clean. I think Vettel's comment shave to be tempered by the fact that in testing no one passes, and stick to the racing line all day, exaggerating the effect of marbles off line...

nothing vettel says ever should be taken seriously at any point in time ever

A bit harsh :D
