Every year I've been taking part in "The Great Backyard Bird Count" it's a great joint project between Cornell and the Audubon Society... basically you maintain a list of all the birds you've seen in your area... house, work, a park, anywhere really. An it greatly helps for real scientific data. You can log your results and then see a tremendous database grow from all of the responses nationally.

Even if you're not really into birds, it's a good thing to do with a little one for an hour or two to kill some rambunctiousness. You can do a little bit or a lotta bit... it's February 18th through the 21st.

I ornithologise every morning when that daym crow wakes me before the sun is even up  !!

No seriously I like the study/hobby yet have never taken it very seriously as too write down specific species. On that note though over the past few months I have seen a few Quail and that has become a very rare site, beautiful bird and very tasty aswell :D .

Actually Texas leads the pack in the number of different species observed. Use northerners don't get nearly as many this time of year.

My list is up to 62 different species which is high for just one location, but I've got farms, forests, rivers, and some meadows all within a few hundred meters of one another so I get a lot of variety year round.

When there's snow on my property, you can spot them a couple hundred meters away!

On Christmas day of '06 my mom said "Hey look there's Bill!", (a Cardinal with that brilliant red), I freaked out alittle because we lost Bill my stepfather the night before.

Conservation

Generally, the Great Tit is doing well, both expanding its range and increasing in abundance. This may be a result of milder winters and using nest boxes and feeders in gardens.

Now the newscaster thread, I'm ok with it turning to filth, littler it with busty bobble-heads I don't care, but this is science godammit! No hot chick pics allowed unless they're wearing a lab coat!
