Seeming as Fernando's under attack, I'll be his Perry Mason

We all know there are plenty of people here that will welcome the opportunity to try and put Fernando and his fans down. Sometimes its done in good humor, sometimes they are nothing but cheap-shots. Some people let off a little steam and some carry stupid grudges for over 30 years.

For me, any team and driver that lines up and races for our entertainment is doing me a favour. It's ok to have a go at some of the things they might say and do, but, in the end they are just being human. Personally, I think they are all fundamentally decent blokes. They are all at the extreme high end of skill in their field - compared to the rest of the world, even the guys finishing at the end of the pack each race.

If anyone wants to take a cheap shot at Fernando for either not saying congratulations to Vettel fast enough or interpreting his congrats as being "begrudging" or this as proof that he's not a good sportsman, then, given the level of disappointment he must have been feeling, well, I guess you'll always find a reason to hate him.

Lastly, the image below is from Fernando's blogs immediately after the race. Personally I thought it was both positive, especially in terms of his team spirit and honest in his openness about his disappointment.

As I alluded to in my post, I guess it's what you're orientation towards the guy is. If you have permanent "dislike" blinkers on you will find the fault in anything he says or does. You're not Robinson Caruso in that regard.

For me it was understandable, given what he was probably feeling at that moment, and what's been considered acceptable in F1 and other sports previously. Do we want feeling-less PR-puppets? Or do we want drivers who show their human side? I can accept his human side coming through, and, remember what he said, at the first opportunity he was given to comment on Petrov and the that aspect of the race.

I wouldnt have been happy if it were a McLaren driver behaving that way. Its not a matter of colours, its just bad sportsmanship. You didnt see Hamilton do that in 07. Guys are out there to race and finish as high up as possible, I dont know what Alonso expected Petrov to do. Its a sport, you win and lose carrying on like a sook because you lost is not justified in any sense.

2010 - Singapore - McLaren driver. Wasn't limited to a hand gesture, was up to "throwing equipment" level. Where were your "bad sportsmanship" comments then? Or let me guess, that will be magically different in some way for you.

For me, both those incidents are low level, and simply being human and understandable at a moment of extreme disappointment.

Lewis throwing equipment around out of "frustration" is OK.

Fernando acting in anyway out of "frustration" is bad. As I said in the beginning, those who just hate Fernando will find fault in whatever he says and does.

So i guess Webber doing it at Monaco in 06 or Kimi putting his foot down to deliberately blow his engine causing a very public flame out is bad sportsmanship? They are frustrations within themselves more than blaming other drivers.

Having a go at Petrov is not frustration. Its bad sportsmanship. Do you really think that at this stage of his career he hasn't come to terms with the fact this is a sport where everyone is racing each other? Being beaten by someone is by no means justification for having a go at them because them beating you cost you dearly in the championship. Frustrated at losing the title is no way to go and blame another driver for it, when in reality he should be blaming his team and even himself for being in that position.


You know you earn respect by winning but also in how you lose.

Toro Rosso's line-up for 2011 is under the spotlight despite it having signed youngsters Sebastien Buemi and Jaime Alguersuari to continue for it.

But after the leading driver of Red Bull's current crop of up-and-comers - Australian Daniel Ricciardo - so impressed with his pace in the RB6 in Abu Dhabi last week, the rumours have again started.

Ricciardo's programme for 2011 has not yet been decided, but neither Ricciardo nor his boss Dr Helmut Marko are ruling out a move into Formula One.

"We pushed Bernoldi, Klien, Liuzzi and Speed without a breakthrough," Marko said. "Daniel Ricciardo is the next top talent. A new Vettel? I don't know."

Next year, Ricciardo - Red Bull's F1 reserve in 2010 and second in the Renault World Series - might have a chance to prove himself. When asked to assess the progress of Buemi and Alguersuari in 2010, Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost hinted that the 22-year-old Buemi has now had enough time to prove whether he belongs in F1.

"At the beginning of the season he scored points and had a really good level of performance. But at the end of the season he struggled a bit," Tost said, adding Alguersuari improved "step by step" and was "on the correct path".

When asked about driver continuity for 2011, Tost continued: "Well, you never know what will happen in Formula One. Our main priority is building a successful car. Regarding drivers and continuity, we will see."

i normally try to agree with everyone on here, but sadly spankyham i cant agree with you about fernando's frustrations, like at the end of abu dhabi, he pulled alongside petrov and gave him a gesture, now personally i dont think you would see any other driver doing that! imo thats bad sportsmanship!

Buemi really hasn't been that impressive in Formula One. Alguersuari, on the other hand, has potential in my opinion. Ricciardo looks pretty quick. The problem is that, with the exception of Vettel, moving to Toro Rosso has pretty much proven to be career suicide. Not bad if you like being sacked by SMS, mind you...
