Senna was killed by a pushrod going through his helmet, can't help but think that neither gravel or tarmac would have saved him tbh.
If gravel did end up saving him, it would only have been by accident, as the rod may have been flung at a different angle due to the difference in speed. His head also smacked off the car (in the area of the headrest) due to the massive deceleration which also inflicted serious injuries. As said, cars often gilde over the gravel, rather than the car digging in, so I still think Senna would have hit the wall in at a similar speed. Gravel, HANS etc. would have made little difference.

A tyre barrier would have saved Senna's life, they couldn't move the wall further back because not too far behind it is a river.
I agree. The tragic thing is Senna was at the track only a few months before and didn't think of this, and that they are very cheap and easy to get hold off.
Gravel should be banned - it's bad in many ways: too many get beached, then safety car is needed to get them out; dangerous as explained above; not the best way to stop a car in most instances - better have control and brakes working on tarmac; damage to cars from gravel with whatever implications; gravel gets kicked onto race track and may interfere with somebody else's race...
I agree, again. It's use should be kept to a minimum.
Finally, although I agree that gravel is not the way to go, I would like to see more of a penalty for going off the track.
