Symonds received a lighter punishment than Briatore, but it wasn't no punishment.

I do also note how many of the posts on this thread (not the one quoted) discuss peoples' personal dislike for Flavio, and don't even consider whether or not he does, or does not, have a valid legal case.

Piquet was the person I was referring to that got no punishment. Pat was offered it(immunity) but declined.

Briatorre has not AFAIK denied that he was responsible for ordering one of his team drivers to crash his car on purpose.
This being the case, then he should face criminal proceedings for endangering life.
The FIA may or may not have judged the motor sport side of the issue correctly, that is a matter for them.
I see absolutely no reason for allowing anybody proven of acting in such a criminal manner any access to sporting events in the future.

Briatore says FIA hearing was 'a sham'

Flavio Briatore has accused the FIA of holding secret talks before the meeting in which the former Renault boss was banned for life from Formula 1.

Briatore said the FIA had held secret negotiations before what he labelled as a "sham hearing".

Responding to the FIA's criticism for having leaked documents about his legal case against the governing body to the press, the Italian said he had nothing to hide and that the documents were not confidential.

"The FIA neglects to mention that, according to declarations by one of its own vice-presidents to the media, the world council's decision was rather the outcome of secret negotiations on the eve of the sham hearing," Briatore's statement said, according to Reuters.

The former Renault boss said former FIA president Max Mosley had been "clearly blinded by an excessive desire for personal revenge."

Briatore was banned from the sport for life in September after being found guilty of being part of the plot to fix the result of the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix.

Im not a big fan of Briatore but I can believe what he says. Mosely operates like that....so I hope Briatore takes him to the cleaners!

My biggest problem with this verdict is that Piquet walked away with immunity, whilst Flavio was banned for life. It doesn't add up, Piquet was at least as guilty and the delay in coming forward made him doing so at all all but pointless. Additionally, we know of at least two others who were aware of and discussing the events (Including a senior FiA official) as early as Brazil last year, but nothing was done. Several of the key players' actions have gone unaccounted for, we have an anonymous key witness who was not cross-examined and a guilty party not held accountable in any way, shape or form. The word travesty springs to mind.

yep, i always thought NP shouldve had his super-licence revoked at least..
the punishments were not fair when com[ared together

the only thing i miss him for is that he was a team boss who was interesting. [apart from being a part of renaults 2 winning years]

On the flip side of it, Piquet might of gone to the FIA and said he knew something but was not going to tell for fear of reprisal.

FIA offered him the world to find out what he knew. by then it is too late as they would be in a world of problem for going back on the deal. Piquet on the other hand even though he is not banned for life I would imagine that he is not in the best of light in the paddock and chances of returning to F1 is slim (unless one of the new teams picks him up this year)

The Pat part is the only bit that confuses me, they already had the evidence so why offer to let him off free?

Flavio even though he was the team boss, I would imagine that the FIA would have to of proven that he knew what was going on, but then again the buck stops with him as he was team boss. much like Ron fell on his sword this year.
