Formula One teams have agreed not to run Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) at next year, but in 2011 they could all be using a standard version of the energy recovery technology.

With KERS hailed as a green solution for the high energy-consuming sport, only two teams will finish the 2009 season in Abu Dhabi next month with the systems.

Next year, KERS is again allowed, but the Formula One Teams’ Association have agreed a gentleman's pact to ignore those relevant sections of the technical regulations. However, according to Auto Motor und Sport, the apparent KERS snub might be short-lived.

The publication reports that Ferrari's KERS component suppliers MTS and Saft are being lined up to supply a standard system in 2011 for a fee of €2m per team.

Hmm, well KERS was only ever going to have any chance of working as intended if every team ran it, we'll see what happens i guess. I wish it wasn't a standard system though, that rules out any area for innovation/different approaches (ie Williams' flywheel system)!!

The Ferrari KERS seems to be the best of the field; the McLaren KERS is technologically better I believe but lacks the reliability of the Ferrari system. I don't believe that the Ferrari KERS has failed this season; of course as always I am not 100% sure about that so I could be wrong!

They had a few issues in early races, most notably an insulation problem which took Massa out of third place in China. Raikkonen had a problem in Malaysia which meant he wouldn't have restarted the race, i think that was KERS related but i'm not 100% on that... They haven't had any problems recently though, whereas McLaren had minor issues in Singapore and Japan (as i'm sure you are aware of).

Yeah, I guess those were teething problems in the early part of the season - Ferrari since then hasn't had any problems with it anymore me thinks, while McLaren had a couple glitches. Either one is probably just fine and suited to become the standard. However, I would like to see the Williams solution and compare it and only then should the FIA make a decision. It would also help Williams financially while Ferrari and McLaren really don't need extra dough shoveled over.

Standardised KERS is not a good idea as far as I am concerned. I would not necessarily object to the idea of KERS being compulsory, provided it was affordable for all teams and regulated properly, but teams have to be given the choice between buying a unit or developing their own, much like the engine situation.
