Contentious. I'm not sure I'm with you on that, when was the last ground braking discovery? There's plenty of people trying, but I don't think that warrants a yearly prize either.

I don't know much about the three winners this year but last year Yoichiro Nambu, Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa were very deserving imo. I did a presentation on CP violation which happened to coincide with their work into symmetry breaking quite nicely. I'd say some discoveries and predictions are more worthy of a nobel prize than others but I still believe that most of the winners deserved their prize, unlike some of the Peace prize laureates.

Other Presidents who have got it are Carter(but not until some 25 odd years after his presidency) and Teddy and Wilson.
Wilson Declared war on Germany, suppressed anti war groups at home, and officialized segregation. Yet they give him the world's biggest peace prize for forming the League of Nations, which the US never joined, and which ultimately proved a failure. I hear he also wanted to enter armed conflict with Canada, but I heard it before therte was teh internets and I can't find anything about it.
I don't wanna say anything disparaging about Obama, but I just never heard anything about his peace efforts. If we go by what's reported on, Nixon did more for peace than Obama.
