Luca Badoer has claimed that negative press coverage of his two races substituting for Felipe Massa encouraged Ferrari to drop him in favour of Giancarlo Fisichella.

Long-time Ferrari test driver Badoer returned to Formula 1 after a ten-year absence when Michael Schumacher's neck injury prevented him from making his intended comeback while Massa recovered from the head injuries sustained in Hungary.

Badoer struggled in both the European and Belgian Grands Prix - spending both weekends at the tail of the field. He received substantial negative press coverage for his results, and he reckons Ferrari would have given him another chance but for all the bad press being aimed in his direction.

"Those who write don't understand how much harm they can cause," Badoer was quoted as saying by Gazzetta Sportiva. "The media played a fundamental role in the decision to replace me."

The Italian remains convinced that his performances would have improved given more time - and says he is still proud of his time as a Ferrari F1 driver.

"I realised my dream," Badoer said. "I will always be able to tell my kids I raced two races for Ferrari. Maranello had faith in me. I only have one regret - from the third grand prix I would have done better.

"There was no agreement on how many races I would do. I thought I had time to improve. And these rules stop a reserve driver from testing and make him a victim - it happens only in Formula 1."

Badoer admitted that Fisichella, who is moving to Ferrari after taking a shock second place for Force India at Spa, was likely to fare much better than him.

"Giancarlo is a quick driver," he said. "I am happy for him, he has achieved his dream of driving a Ferrari and he will do better than me because he has been racing for years in F1 and knows the 2009 cars well.

"He will have to learn to use the KERS but that's a minor thing. He can quickly aim for results, otherwise replacing me would have made no sense."

Ferrari has also announced that Fisichella will stay on and become the team's reserve driver in 2010, but Badoer expects there to be room for him in Ferrari's testing line-up too.

"My intention is to stay," he said. "I am finished with races but my relationship with Ferrari continues."

A pretty bitter interview, sugared only with his relationship with Ferrari continuing. As unfortunate as things were for Badoer, he would not have done better at Monza, and he would not have done better than Raikkonen even if he had ten years to get used to the car. If Badoer continues to delude himself, people will loose sympathy for him.

Simply put STFU Luca! You sucked and your so called 'experience' was a 'cloak & dagger' illusion. You keep saying you have finally 'experienced' your dream to race for Ferrari yet you left the TEAM out in realizing this dream, how many friend's and family member's did you have in the pit's and stand's to document YOUR short lived glory day's???

I have been very disheartened with Ferrari for the past year's as they have lost the plot imo and selecting Badoer over Gene is proof of that. I am basically now just a fan with no team or driver to support 110% :( .

by all means the media were negative about you, and ferrari were scared shitless about you in monza - but what your missing is that fact that it is all warranted. Do well and you'll be fine,

Just for once, well done the media!

I think he would have done better at Monza, but not as well as Fisi would.

I was the whole time thinking the car was slow because Ferrari was putting alot of test parts on it and Luca's job was merely for the testing of them, but if that were the case he would have mentioned it by now, unless it's secret, in which case they would be giving him quite a premium retainer to keep quiet about it. We shall never know...

Or we will once he publishes his memoirs titled: "Why I sucked so bad in the F60 - and how my little boy's dream turned into a nightmare"

Leave the guy alone the lot of you.

Yes he was slow, but it's like he said, if he was actually able to test the car he would have been fine.

I've argued to death for him on another forum so I won't get into full on ranting here, but people need to understand his point of view, and not just slag him off.

In a way, what he said is correct. It was extremely short notice for him in the first place after Michael pulled out, the media jumped on his back because of Michael pulling out, they didn't give him any time, and then at Spa when the Fisi rumours surfaced, he was on a hiding to nothing. The media treated him as a complete joke. They didn't even give him a chance.

I have to point out that I'm aware he probably wouldn't have beaten Kimi even if he drove the remaining races, but at least then if he was as bad as he was, it would have been justified as he'd have had the time to at least find his form.

He did decently at Spa and didn't make any mistakes, and let's not forget the field was probably the closest I've ever seen.

Anyway, i'm a huge Fisi fan and I'm extremely happy for him, but I feel really sorry for Luca.
