Martin Whitmarsh is confident that car updates at McLaren can help the British outfit achieve a second straight Grand Prix victory in Valencia this weekend. The team principal, who took over from Ron Dennis at the start of 2009, stresses that the Woking squad will be aiming for victory from Friday's first practice session.

As Lewis Hamilton crossed the finish line to win the Hungarian Grand Prix three weeks ago, the World Champion ended a winning draught for both himself and the team which stretched back to October of last year.

Whitmarsh hopes to wear McLaren's traditionally coloured victory shirt again on Sunday

"While the summer break has meant we have four weeks to enjoy Lewis' victory in Budapest, it's very important that we are able to maintain that winning momentum into this weekend's race," Whitmarsh commented. "Fortunately, we have made a structured effort to bring further improvements to the car in Spain and the whole team has been buoyed by that win and is really looking forward to another strong set of results this weekend. I've no doubts that we'll certainly hit the ground running on Friday."

The European Grand Prix will also be an important one on the corporate side for McLaren, as Whitmarsh explained: "The Grand Prix also marks the 250th race of our team partnership with Mercedes-Benz. It is pleasing to have reached this important milestone off the back of a win and we are all focused on continuing this form in Valencia."
World Champion Lewis Hamilton will climb back into the cockpit of his McLaren on Friday as European Grand Prix practice signals the end of Formula One's four-week summer break of 2009. Winner of the last race in Hungary, the McLaren driver is confident that new parts can keep the McLaren at the front of the grid.

Hamilton's McLaren finished second in Valencia last year

With a heavily criticised McLaren car at the beginning of the year now a race winner, Hamilton has enjoyed heading into the holiday period as a victor again. "It's great to be getting back to business after the four-week break," he said. "I'm still buzzing from the win in Hungary and I'm hopeful of being able to carry that pace into the Valencia weekend, particularly with our new upgrades to the car."

Michael Schumacher may not be present as expected previously but Hamilton is fully aware of the challenges presented at the 3.4 mile / 5.4 kilometre street circuit. "It's a very demanding circuit - the kind of place that punishes any mistakes hard," Lewis explained. "It's quite tight and relatively slow, so it should suit our package.

"It's also very difficult to overtake, as we discovered last year, but with our KERS (Kinetic Energy Recover System, yielding an extra 80 horsepower for 6.6 seconds per lap) Mercedes-Benz has proved that anything can happen and I'm once again hoping that it will provide the difference in the race."

McLaren seem confident for this weekend looks like some upgrades are on the way as well. :)

We are going to have an excellent European Grand Prix. We'll have plenty of incidents and safety cars.

Well that is what I keep telling myself.

Well that is what I keep telling myself.

Face it is probably going to be the most boring race of the year with some drivers making car trains! :P

the one good thing the european gp has goin for it is that the break between the last one and this one is so big that we will all just be glad to be seeing racing again, even if it is on supposedly the most boring track of the calender.
im personally really looking forward to it

Since Grosjean hasn't even been confirmed for Renault yet, maybe they'll re-hire Rene Arnoux and he'll give the "Trulli train" a good run for its money. :hehe:

When I was at Enstone last week, the team hinted that Grosjean was driving, but tbh they admitted that they wouldn't be confirming him if they weren't allowed to race (as there wasn't a point).

I asked what if they were and they said then they would.

Grosjean is all prepped.
