From F1-Live:

The latest reports from the Budapest hospital AEK about the condition of recovering Ferrari driver Felipe Massa are very positive.

It is said that the Brazilian, seriously injured when flying debris struck the front of his helmet during Hungarian GP qualifying last Saturday, has been woken from his induced coma and will not be put unconscious again.

Another scan on Monday afternoon showed that the 28-year-old's brain swelling had subsided, moving the medical team to wake him up and withdraw the artificial breathing.

Massa is said to now be conscious and has spoken his first words since the crash. A full recovery is now expected, with the biggest concern now being the condition of his damaged left eye.

There were reports on Monday that Massa's optic nerve behind his left eye had been damaged to an unspecified degree.

It is however believed that his personal doctor Dino Altmann will not now push for the transfer from Hungary to Paris, given Monday afternoon's positive news indicates a far shorter hospitalisation.

Excellent!

Massa probably on leave for a while

A doctor involved in the recovery of Felipe Massa said on Monday he believes the Brazilian will certainly not return to the cockpit of his Ferrari in 2009.

Surgeon Robert Veres, who told reporters at the AEK hospital in central Budapest that the operation on Massa's skull last Saturday saved the 28-year-old's life, was asked by media about the long-term prospects for his racing career.

"I don't know. It's too early to say anything concerning his future, regarding the race," he answered.

More positive were Rubens Barrichello and Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo, who were at the hospital on Sunday night and Monday respectively.

Fellow Brazilian Barrichello spoke with the press as he emerged from the hospital, and revealed that he had been able to talk with Massa's doctors.

"I asked 'as someone who has no understanding of medicine, how will he be?' The doctor said 'most probably he is going to be 100 percent fine'," the Brawn driver explained.

Montezemolo, meanwhile, said that on his flight from Italy to Budapest on Monday, he recalled similarly dashing to the hospital bed of Niki Lauda in 1976 when the Austrian was read the last rites following a fiery crash.

"Thank God the situation is completely different this time," the Italian said. "Felipe is on a good way and I thank God."

Things are going in the right direction for Massa:woohoo:

Budapest, 27 July 2009 - The medic's at Budapest's AEK hospital presented a chart of Felipe Massa's condition.

All the exams done by the Hungarian medical team were negative, which is a further confirmation of the encouraging signs over the last hours.

The Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver, who's no longer artificially ventilated, met his family answering to their questions.

As far as his left eye is concerned the doctors confirmed that close evaluation has to be done over the next days.

Felipe now sleeps without the help of sedatives with his wife, his parents, his brother and his friend and manager Nicolas Todt by his side. They will spend another night in hospital, where they will meet Stefano Domenicali tomorrow.

Massa Taken off Respirator and Talking! :D

Massa taken off respirator
- Ferrari ace likely to miss rest of season

Rubens Barrichello arrives to visit Massa on Sunday
Budapest: Injured Formula One driver Felipe Massa has been brought out of an artificial coma, taken off a respirator and has been able to communicate with his doctors and family representatives, his doctors said on Monday.

“His condition has improved significantly over the past 24 hours and he remains stable,” Lajos Zsiros, the chief surgeon told a news conference. “We have ended sedation and took him off the respirator.

“He’s sleepy but has been able to reply to questions and has been able to move his limbs adequately.”

Brazilian Massa fractured his skull in an accident during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday when he was hit just above his left eye by a bouncing spring, weighing almost a kilo, that broke free from compatriot Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn car.

Doctors said Massa, last year’s championship runner-up, may have also suffered an eye injury but could not yet tell the extent of any possible damage.

Dino Altmann, Massa’s personal physician, said the Brazilian’s condition was reassuring.

“He’s awake, he has been answering questions, he has been asking what has happened to him,” Altmann said on the sidelines of the news conference.

Altmann said the Massa family is happy with the care the injured driver was receiving at the military hospital AEK and moving him was not currently on the agenda.

Robert Veres, the surgeon who operated on Massa, said earlier on Monday that it was too early to tell how quickly Massa could recover but he was likely to miss the rest of the season.

Zsiros also declined to predict Massa’s recovery but said that in theory, a man could fully recover after such an accident.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo, who flew to Budapest on Monday to visit Massa, said his main concern for the time being was Massa’s recovery and the team would consider his possible replacement later.

“For us, the first priority is to find out Felipe’s recovery progress and situation,” Di Montezemolo told a joint news conference with Massa’s doctors. “Felipe is a very important member of the Ferrari family not just the Ferrari team.

“The first priority now is to find out the situation with Felipe and then we will see and we will think, without pressure. Only at that moment will we make a decision and if we have to take a decision we will make a good decision,” Di Montezemolo said.

Manwhile, Max Mosley, president of motor racing’s governing body, on Monday asked its safety commission to prepare a report on the recent debris-related accidents in the Formula One and Two world championships.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) safety commission, which is made up of medical and technical representatives from all areas of motor sport, will submit its report and recommendations to the World Motor Sport Council, the FIA said in a statement.

Monday’s FIA statement said: “Preliminary findings suggest the helmet being used by Felipe Massa may have played a significant role in limiting the injuries sustained.

“The FIA 8860 helmet, which took eight years to develop by the FIA and FIA Institute, provides increased protection in all key impact areas.”

Massa’s accident came a week after Henry Surtees, son of former Formula One world champion John, was killed when hit by a loose wheel during a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch in England. (Reuters)

That's good news for Felipe-baby now he's coming around, but let's hope he makes a full recovery and that he is able to climb back into that Ferrari cockpit one day. :)
