Laffite was pretty much an OAP and still going well for Ligier in 1985 and 1986. :D

Prost. His very good speed was concealed in silky-smooth driving. He was able to look after his tyres, was at one with his car, and had good technical knowledge. His only weakness, and in my opinion damages his claim to be the greatest driver ever, was his poor wet-weather driving.

Alesi was a great driver. I've said before and I'll say it again: it's one of the tragedies of Formula One that he won only a single Grand Prix.

Agreed. Still one of the greats, but behind MS, the rainmeister.

Obviously Prost, but i give massive props to Panis who was going brilliantly well in the '97 season until his unfortunate crash in Canada.

Agreed!

Wrong time: wrong car. He should've gone to Williams when he had the chance, imo.

I'd like to say Alesi but he's not really French.

Well that must be Alain Prost of course. Here's my top 5:
1. Alain Prost
2. Rene Arnoux
3. Jacques Laffite
4. Didier Pironi
5. Jean Alesi

P.S. I like the books of Michel Vaillant an Alain Chevallier very much, especially those about the F!.
