In a lot of cases the runner up is the bloke that would have won it if not for one or two blows of bad luck, like a tire blowing or some mechanical failure, or some bizarre way of counting the points. Like when Senna beat Prost for the title despite having fewer points. And other things. Those runners up are all super solid drivers and this all goes to show the title winner isn't necessarily the best.

Especially in the last 4 years where a runaway driver got a runaway car.

vettel though prolly is the best. Hard to tell with that car under him. Either the best in general or maybe more accurate to say the best at working THAT car.
