Nothing is wrong with having a chat, but we do have a chat room, it could have condensed it into a couple of posts a piece and spared some of us pages worth of scrolling. I defend the right to chat, but there is a place for that and there's a place for forum discussion and commentary and they are distinct. Anyway not a big deal, but we shouldn't discount the comment that it's not the optimum venue for chatting.
"I don't want to be part of a forum where everyone has differing opinions." Boom...

Interesting, right now I'm training a reasonably large organization on implementing Agile/Scrum. A key component is the focus on EQ and the promotion of discussion - the purpose - learning

Nothing wrong with a bit of banter. Certainly nothing wrong with discussion and differing points of view.I think the issue is when the threads meander hopelessly off topic. Then it takes pages of scrolling to get back to the point that was being discussed. this puts some people off. There is the chat room as has been pointed out and there is the 'anything else' thread, where just like it says, you can chat about practically anything. we even have a 'general chat and banter' thread, which was started specifically to keep chit chat off the more serious threads, particularly on a race weekend when there's a lot to talk about. we're all guilty of a little meandering, its keeping it manageable, this is first and foremost an F1 forum.

I tried the chat room; but, there was no one else there (should I take a hint?). I posted in the race thread and the only other member responding/online was Liam.
Going back and forth between the various threads can easily lead to confusion and duplication of comments/posts; but, if that's what we decide, no problem!

There will sometimes be duplication of points being made, particularly when a race has a lot of talking points, such as stewards actions, crashes etc. there will be overlap. The problem is when the thread drifts away from the topic title.
The chat room has been sadly deserted of late, perhaps we should make a conscious effort to get in there on race weekends. Monaco anyone?

As the person who first raised the issue of the 'chat' in the race discussion thread, maybe I need to clarify.
The thing that grated me and made me bitch, wasn't the fact the race was being discussed in the race thread - because it wasn't being 'discussed'. On the whole it was more like a running commentary....
Alonso has pitted. Look button has been overtaken. Look. A pit stop.
And personally, I don't think the race discusion thread is the place for it. But, hey as Lew pointed out, my posts and opinions are disliked by everyone. So I'm sure its of little relevance.

Awww,
What's going on? I haven't been too active lately, and have you all been fighting without my influential presence?
I wasn't around for the race live, but you are right, the sort of commentary you describe is for the chat room.

Let's make a conscious effort to get the chat room revived for the race! The Tifosi and McLaren fans can console each other for a change, while the Merc fans can enjoy and gloat over the day in the sun
