When I was in the school system, Remembrance Day (November 11 in Canada) was a statutory holiday.
Currently, not all the provinces observe this, although Federally it is a day off.
I'm not sure that making it a stat holiday will do more to bring attention to the importance of this day.
At least, if the schools are open, students are involved in Remembrance Day ceremonies to mark the day;
whereas, if they were at home, they'd probably be playing video games.

Four provinces do not mark Remembrance Day as a statutory holiday, as it is business as usual after noon ET, but some want all of Canada to honour Nov. 11.

NDP MP Dan Harris introduced a private member’s bill on Monday urging Nov. 11 to be marked as a national holiday.

The date is a statutory holiday for federal workers, and all three territories and six provinces — Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick, P.E.I., Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C. — mark the day each year.

Only Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Manitoba do not.

There is normally a smaller parade on the 11th at cenotaph.

I am planning a trip to London next year for the big parade.

Are children involved in the parade? Do they participate? Are there a lot in attendance watching?

My kids went. They where OK behaved apart from toilet runs every 2 minutes. I took some photos and videos on SWMBO'S phone.

There was a lot of people there actually. I would say about 1/4 of the village.

bless him! That's a lovely picture. Does he understand a little of what it's all about? I find children can understand most things if you present it to them correctly using language they are familiar with.
