On the whole, it depends on the driver and car involved. it is never as simple as saying 50:50 or anything else.

With a great car, a great driver can win consistently whereas a mediocre driver is not going to do so. But the mediocre driver will still produce results that are flattering to his ability.

With a mediocre car a great driver can produce results flattering to the car whereas a mediocre driver cannot.

Either way both the car and driver matter but the relative percentages move across the board depending on the situation.

No. This year's McLaren is a terrible car and Button - a good (if not 'great') driver has produced results which are somewhat flattering to the car.

Agreed! And in that case, you should be ready to apply that rule to a certain driver with #1 on his car at present.

Thats why on Top Gear the drivers get all exited because it's the same car.

I'd believe Top Gear is a little scripted, but I don't think the drivers are in on it.
It's a moot point anyway, since you can't make a valid comparison across days/months/seasons. Would love to see a face-off though
