Virgin Racing’s Lucas di Grassi has come out on top after a tight fight at the top of the leaderboard in this weekend’s International Challenge of Go-Kart Champs karting event, organised by Ferrari driver Felipe Massa and staged in Brazil.
Having triumphed in the opening heat on Saturday, di Grassi failed to finish in the second although the result was still enough to ensure he enjoyed overall victory, despite being tied on 25 points with fellow Formula 1 pilots Massa and Rubens Barrichello plus star of the show Bia Figueriedo, with the IndyCar driver having won Heat 2.
The 2010 event marked the first time that drivers took part over two days, although di Grassi was forced to retire in the second part when his kart’s exhaust pipe was broken following a rear end shunt from Antonio Pizzonia.
The lead was then disputed by Massa, Barrichello and Jaime Alguersuari although Figueriedo – the only female competitor in the field – displayed a superb charge from 11th on the grid in the 28-lap race.
Barrichello, Alguersuari and Massa were all close to overall victory as the second heat continued although – as they finished in second, eighth and eleventh places respectively – the title was di Grassi’s as the latter watched from the sidelines.
In Heat 2, Figueriedo stunningly snatched victory away from Barrichello in the last knockings. “I never dreamed about overtaking a driver like Barrichello in a race,” smiled the Indy driver, who continues to search for a race seat prior to 2011.
