It does say so at events. Even at Silverstone with all its health and safety considerations it says it in big letters at the track and also on the tickets.

Different situation at Silverstone, it's not 50 miles through a forest. Can you even get access to the track during practice/quali/race sessions without climbing a fence?

Most sane minded people wouldnt even try to get near the track when the cars are out but it is possible as the lunatic in 2003 showed. No I was just making the point that even with all those safety measures, still the warning goes out that the sport is dangerous and you watch at your own risk.

Apparently the sanctioning body has spectator proximity rules to prevent this very thing but they claim the promoter failed to comply.

Regardless, you can be sure some politician will see this as an opportunity for free publicity and will pass a truly asinine safety law to fix something he/she/it knows absolutely nothing about (and probably isn't broken).

Just heard that the US Bureau of Land Management (a government agency that apparently controls the land the race was held on) will commit more of its personnel at future events to ensure promoters are properly enforcing the existing rules to safeguard the spectators. If this tragedy came to pass because there were adequate rules that were not properly implemented, I think this is a pretty sensible solution. What's the point fixing something that wasn't proved broken because it wasn't being used?
