Heidfeld set to replace De la Rosa at Sauber

Nick Heidfeld looks set to make a swift return to Formula One, after reports revealed that he is on the verge of replacing Pedro de la Rosa at Sauber.

The German was left without a seat in 2011, following BMW’s exit from the sport, and was forced to seek refuge first as a Mercedes’ tester and subsequently Pirelli’s official tyre development driver.

However, Heidfeld’s work with the Italian manufacturer appears to have left him in high demand in sport, with Sauber expected to make the switch for the next round of the championship in Singapore

Despite this, team principal Peter Sauber would not be drawn on the situation, with Autosport reporting him as saying: “I do not wish to make any comment about our drivers,”

Such a move would be the third time Heidfeld has driven for the Hinwil-based outfit, having driver for Sauber between 2001 and 2003 and then under the guise of BMW Sauber from 2006 onwards.
