Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima has walked away from a high-speed crash on a day of testing at Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
Nakajima was driving the new Williams FW30 when he went off-track on the first corner at 11:25am local time. The area has recently been changed from being a gravel trap to plain asphalt meaning his car did not slow down before smashing into the crash barrier head-first, severely damaging the front of the car.
Luckily, Nakajima emerged from the car unaided and has not yet reported any physical difficulties. When questioned over the incident, Nakajima merely said, “It was a technical problem.â€
The practice session was stopped for nearly 20 minutes whilst marshals removed the stricken FW30. Williams have confirmed they have stopped testing whilst they investigate what caused the incident Nico Rosberg, the second of the Williams drivers, had been due to take to the track however in light of the accident, his track time has been cancelled whilst the team check his car to ensure it has not got the same problem.
A team spokesman has said of Nakajima, “He is fine. It was related to a front wing mounting issue which will be fixed and the car will be running again tomorrow.â€
