F1 drivers threaten strike action

F1 drivers are threatening strike action over the massively increased cost of the mandatory FIA superlicenses this year.

The FIA has increased the cost of a Formula One superlicense and has pledged that the extra money will go towards making the sport safer however many drivers are unhappy with the new costs.

In 2007, an F1 superlicense cost 1,725 Euros plus 425 Euros per point scored in the 2006 championship. In 2008, an F1 superlicense cost 10,000 Euros plus an added 2,000 Euros for every point scored in last season s championship. The increased costs mean that McLaren s Lewis Hamilton paid just 1,725 Euros for his superlicense last season this season, his superlicense has cost a whopping 228,000 Euros.

This huge jump in pricing has upset some in the paddock and F1 s drivers are now threatening to boycott the British Grand Prix next month. According to German magazine Auto Motor und Sport, the GPDA have requested an urgent meeting with FIA president Max Mosley to discuss the issue. Should Mosley not agree to a review of the superlicenses, the drivers have said they are prepared to go on strike.
