Will Alonso leave?

With the revelation that Ferrari are looking to tempt Hamilton away from McLaren, will McLaren also lose Fernando Alonso? “I can t imagine that Alonso and Hamilton will still be together next year,” Mark Webber commented after the Hungarian Grand Prix which saw much drama in the McLaren garage.

There is much speculation in the Formula One paddock over the future of the Spanish driver, particularly as Alonso has been quoted as saying, “Right now I am thinking me or Hamilton? But I know that nothing will change. I get the feeling that some people at McLaren do not even know that I speak English.”

Spanish newspaper Diario has claimed that Alonso has already made up his mind to leave the silver arrows, and is most likely to join either Renault or BMW. According to the newspaper s source, Alonso is considering switching before the end of the season (does this mean that there is a leak at McLaren?) and he is even prepared to sacrifice being in the running for the 2007 title. “When a driver loses the confidence of his team, there is no turning back,” the paper quoted.

Mario Theissen has quashed rumours that Alonso could be heading to BMW. The team have yet to finalise the contract with Nick Neidfeld for next season, however with the German driver doing so well within the team, it is expected that he will be granted an extension to his contract to drive alongside Pole Robert Kubica in 2008.
