Indian GP preparations

Formula 1 circuit designer Hermann Tilke is currently in India on a two day trip inspecting possible sites for a Formula 1 track around New Dehli. Tilke is visiting various venues to assess their potential as future Formula 1 tracks and will report his findings back to Bernie Ecclestone.

“He has gone around and we have shown him a few places,” Suresh Kalmadi, president of the Indian Olympic Association explained. “He will go back and give his views to Bernie. We are happy with the progress. We are on track.”

In June, the IOA accepted a conditional offer to stage an F1 Grand Prix in 2009, subject to tough conditions including the signing of various commercial agreements by the end of September. Although the IOA are currently busy preparing for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Kalmadi said he was confident that they would be able to meet the stringent conditions of the contract.

With the news that Indian businessman Vijay Mallya has created a rescue package for Spyker F1 in conjunction with Michiel Mol, interest in Formula One in India is bound to increase, making the timing for the introduction of an Indian Grand Prix near-perfect.
