The FIA are opening the tender process for new teams in 2016/17; my take is... why? the current teams, Sauber, Force India and Lotus are already struggling to compete with the current F1 costs and looking at the proposals for rules and regs from 2017 on, the costs are likely to rise, so what is the incentive to join the circus?

FIA opens tender process for new F1 team to join grid in 2016 or 2017

Governing body begins process with a view to the "sustainability and future success of the Formula One World Championship"; American Haas team already joining the grid next year

Citing “due regard for the sustainability and future success of the Formula One World Championship”, the sport’s governing body is looking for a new team to enter the championship at either the start of the 2016 or 2017 season.

After the demise of Caterham over the winter, the grid consists of just 10 teams in 2015 – although Haas F1 are gearing up to make their F1 debut next year after coming through the FIA’s previous tender process in 2013-14.

Prospective candidates in this latest tender have to formally notify the FIA of their interest by June 30, with full applications then to be made by September 1. A decision will be made on September 30, although the FIA stressed that if no team is considered suitable then none will be selected.

All applicants will have to undergo due diligence on their plans, with their technical ability, resources, experience, funding and the value they may bring to the championship all put under the microscope.

The sustainability of the grid at its current complement of teams has proved a hot topic of debate since the end of last season, with the smaller outfits believing the sport’s powerbrokers aren’t doing enough to ensure their survival.

Following the pre-Monaco GP meeting of F1's Strategy Group, the FIA said that a "comprehensive proposal to ensure the sustainability of the sport has emerged" and that “the Strategy Group member Teams have committed to refine it in the next few weeks".

Although not explicitly mentioned in their press release outlining the proposals that were devised to spice up the sport over the next two seasons, the Strategy Group are thought to have again discussed customer cars as a contingency plan.

Were a prospective entrant to get the green light to join the grid from as early as 2016, they would have around only six months to get their F1 operation up and running before racing for the first time.
