It's not a bug, it's by design to stop bots brute forcing access to your account... without this piece of code, someone could be spamming all sorts of crap under your username!

I'm not a hacker or spammer, so don't know their motivation and timing, I guess they pick random users on the forum and attack them for a day or two, then move onto someone else!

I don't think this is someone or something trying to hack into accounts on all occasions. Typo's do cause the user to be prompted to enter an additional code.
