Don't forget, it all started in lowly Tunisia - their successful revolution to oust the dictator gets easily forgotten among the hype about the other countries.

Sounds to me like Formula One itself with BE at the helm - not sure about impotent, but old fart grabbing the cash fo shure!

Whaaa... I thought it started with president Bush spreading the idea of democracy in the middle east? Or, the twitter, or the Facebook.

The profound idea here is that all of these democratic acts by the people in Tunisia, and Egypt and who knows where else, are true democratic results, meaning the people speak. Unlike the way we spread democracy in Iraq, these have had little if no troop or civilian casualties when compared to the last (nearly a decade) in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But to bring this back sort of on topic, since my intent wasn't to discuss the political aspect of it, but more the impact of our beloved Bahrain season opener. I put it in the General F1 Discussion area... maybe I should have put it in the Anything Else area. :)

In any case, I'm glad it's being discussed.

They are just returning to their democratic roots.

Funny how those who created democracy are the ones who end up needing it stuffed down their throats by the democracy adopting counterparts.

But anyway, am i the only one who doesnt mind if this race is just cancelled? I'm obliged to watch it as a fan but really...i wouldnt mind waiting an extra week if it didnt happen...

This is some serious sh*t.

The future of next month's Bahrain Grand Prix was thrown into doubt after this weekend's scheduled GP2 Asia race at the Sakhir circuit near Manama was cancelled because of escalating political tensions in the country.

Bahrain has been rocked by violent anti-government protests in the last week, and more than half a dozen people are believed to have been killed. It is reported that journalists are being stopped from entering the state while internet access is limited, and eyewitnesses report worrying accounts of widespread violence, injuries and deaths.

The GP2 Asia practice scheduled for today was cancelled on Wednesday because medical staff due to be at the track had been rushed to help at local hospitals. But hours later, despite hung-ho rhetoric from the organisers, they were forced into a complete about-turn and scrapped the entire weekend.

The protests began as part of a "day of rage" on Sunday and are expected to continue over the coming days and into the weekend. Various sporting events, including a charity marathon and a local rugby match, have already been cancelled.

FIA president Jean Todt has tried to play down the situation. "I always try not to overreact on breaking stories," he told the Irish Independent. "Of course the essence of the FIA is safety; safety on the racing car, safety on the road, safety in our organisation. So that's what we are claiming, but at the moment there is no reason to have unnecessary concern."

''The safety of all Bahraini nationals, expats and overseas visitors is a priority at all times,'' a spokesman for the Bahrain International Circuit said. ''We are monitoring the situation very closely indeed in association with the relevant authorities and will respond appropriately to any further developments.''

However, CNN reported the last 24 hours have been particularly violent, involving clashes with rubber bullets and tear gas and at least three more people killed.

Lewis:
"In Turkey 2010, I led the race and was told to back off to save fuel and JB had also been told to back off and hold position. Then he overtook me, just as Sebastian did to Mark. That was tough. So I understand the feelings Mark had."

Rather than spewing some meaningless blah blah, why don't you guys look for alternatives?!? Get your butts in gear and contact tracks that could do a one-off race on very short notice. Magny Cours anybody? Imola? Hockenheim? Fuji? Heck even some obscure US track?
Even though it would count for the championship, the teams could write it off in their accounting as a test session, because on such short notice BE and the teams might have to chip in to finance the event.

That is quite an exciting proposition. (not the fact that people are rioting and protesting against their oppressive and corrupted governments)

I hope they make a decision soon so they wont be geographically restricted in the possible tracks that can replace Bahrain.

And who knows? It might be replaced permanently

So the headline on one of my web news standards is Military Takes Key Parts of Bahrain

I think our GP is in jeopardy; Alternatives are certainly needed ASAP.
