What to watch for:

QUALIFYING ROLL-BACK
From Saturday, we will revert back to last year's format after the unpopular elimination-style system was ditched following just two races. Formula One's chief executive Bernie Ecclestone and FIA president Jean Todt were both keen to trial a new aggregate format but the teams, in a united letter of opposition, knocked back that idea as well as getting their way for the 2015-style format to be re-introduced. A huge victory for the teams, and the fans, but one which is unlikely to sit well with Ecclestone and Todt.

EYES ON ALONSO
Double world champion Fernando Alonso has been working around the clock in a bid to prove his fitness. He has provided updates of his status on social media, posting pictures of himself back in training as well as using a bone-healing ultrasound machine on the ribs he fractured in Australia. But Alonso, who arrived in China at the beginning of the week, expressed caution in his pre-race notes, saying his participation here must not be taken for granted. The Spaniard's fate will rest in the hands of the FIA where he will undergo tests on Thursday. Stoffel Vandoorne, the McLaren reserve driver who deputised for him in Bahrain, is on standby and touched down in Shanghai on Wednesday morning.

ROSBERG IN FINE FETTLE
Two wins from two, and five in five stretching back to last season, mean the advantage is with the German and he heads into the Chinese Grand Prix with a 17-point lead over Lewis Hamilton. Of course, it is early days in what is a mammoth 21-round championship, but this is just the start Rosberg needed to his season following his rather lacklustre 2015.

PRESSURE ON HAMILTON?
The 31-year-old appears unaffected by his recent streak - he has not tasted victory since he wrapped up his third championship in Austin last October - but you fancy he needs to buck this losing trend sooner rather than later. The usual questions surrounding his focus are never far from the agenda and his constant updates on Snapchat provide us with an insight into his hectic life away from the Formula One track - he has managed to fit in trips to London, New York and Beijing ahead of this week's race - yet, we should not forget that he has started the opening two grands prix from pole and without two bad starts, he probably would have claimed regulation victories in each. Do not bet against him this weekend.

FERRARI FIGHTING
The Italian constructor have made another step forward over the winter, but they need to mirror their improved performance with greater reliability. They are already 50 points adrift of their rivals after Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel failed to finish in Australia and Bahrain respectively following engine problems. Mercedes are wary of their threat - indeed Rosberg said earlier this week that we are yet to see "the real Ferrari" - but make no bones about it, Mercedes still hold the aces and they will start as the favourites here.

I find the differences in tire choices interesting.
I noticed that some teams, who share engines,
haven't chosen the same tire.
Must be how the car handles, eh?

Hamilton is reporting that he will have a 5 place grid penalty for China:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEKFZ8yr005/

lewishamilton - "Every year, I arrive into Shanghai with the most incredible welcome. This weekend is going to be tough. I will start with a 5 place grid penalty due to a gearbox change but because of you guys I feel energised, motivated, and confident that we can regain ground lost. Thank you all for the love and support over the past 10 years, let's get it TeamLH!!!"#bestfansintheworld #TeamLHChina #TeamLHarmy #letsgetit #godbless #family #wewinandwelosetogether

Obviously the gearbox must have damaged during the race in Bahrain as Hamilton attempted to get back to the front after a poor first lap. Otherwise it could just be a smokescreen to let Hamilton secretly have a new clutch set to try and fix his bad starts.

The rules are "a single gearbox must be used for six consecutive events. Every unscheduled gearbox change results in a five-place grid penalty"

If Vettel can get a good start could we see a Vettel Rosberg Raikkonen podium?

It will be an interesting race again in Shanghai and this time I want Lewis Hamilton to win it. If he succeeds to win it, it will be his third consecutive Chinese Grand Prix win.

P2 Report: Ferrari on top - Hamilton off track
Ferrari lead Mercedes in second practice
2016 Chinese Grand Prix second practicePosted on | 15th April 2016, 8:35 Author Keith Collantine

Ferrari served notice of their potential in the second practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix by out-pacing both Mercedes drivers.

Kimi Raikkonen led the way, being the only driver to lap the Shanghai International Circuit in less than 97 seconds. Raikkonen gave his super-soft tyres a more vigorous preparation before beginning his flying lap and posted the fastest times in the first two sectors before they began to lose their grip.

That put him one-tenth of a second ahead of Sebastian Vettel, who had given his tyres a more gentle treatment and posted a faster final sector time, despite running wide at the turn 14 hairpin.

At the end of the session Vettel attacked the pit lane entrance hard, locking up heavily in his attempt to make the left-hander, wrecking his front-left tyre in the process.

Ferrari relegated the two Mercedes drivers to third and fourth place, Nico Rosberg two-tenths of a second faster than Hamilton. The world champion, who spun twice in the morning session, locked up and headed off the track at turn 14 while doing his race simulation run at the end of the session.

Daniel Ricciardo was ‘best of the rest’ in fifth place with a slender gap to Max Verstappen. Both Toro Rossos appeared in the top ten but Daniil Kvyat’s lap was compromised which left him down in 13th.

Both Force Indias also reached the top ten but the fastest Williams was only tenth – Valtteri Bottas ending the session 1.8s off the pace of Mercedes.

There was no repeat of the tyre failures seen in the morning session for Felipe Massa or any of the other drivers. However Kevin Magnussen did not take part in proceedings as Renault continued to investigate the cause of his failure.

During Vettel's interview he was saying to not read too much into today's times. We have no idea of the fuel loads and what the teams were specifically testing/practicing for.
We're getting the Sky 1 feed this year and the coverage is fantastic compared to the BBC feed we'd gotten in the past. We're really enjoying the interviews with the drivers, engineers etc.

Sorry im new to this and unsure of all the rules.

With lewis having a penalty of 5 places and not qualifying does he serve any other penalty or does it just fall away?

He'll start from the back of the grid (or if he chooses to from pitlane), no matter what. He can't start 5 spots behind the last driver on the grid;-)

The rrr's take the top three in China. Can Ricciardo or Raikkonen get that bullet start to lead the Mercedes after turn 1?
The Ferrari's cannot waste much time getting past the Red Bull if they are to have any chance of taking it to Rosberg.

"Championship leader Nico Rosberg will start from pole in China, while team mate Lewis Hamilton will start dead last on the grid after an engine problem meant he was unable to set a time in qualifying.

Rosberg will be joined on the front row by Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull after mistakes from both Ferrari drivers left Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel in third and fourth, respectively."
