The US Grand Prix at the extraordinary Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas! An amazing track being a cross between Spa, Silverstone and Hockenheim and perfect for an exciting race.

What is of interest at Austin?

Hamilton could be crowned champion this weekend but that was a given since seeing the W06 in testing, probably one of the easier wdc's ever won! Hamilton needs Rosberg to help out by keeping Vettel from finishing second to make it happen.

Renault and Ferrari may be bringing engine updates so that could spice things up.

It's Vettel vs Rosberg in the battle for second in the wdc. Vettel is currently 7 points clear of Rosberg.

Rossi will be in the Manor. He is the first American to race at his home event since Scott Speed at the 2007 US Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

Hass could name their second driver but may want to wait to Mexico as Gutierrez is the rumored choice.

And will Red Bull finally find an engine?

Raining and flooding forecast. Also it should be mentioned that the track is built on a flood plain!

If the weather in Austin is as bad as expected, the race could be cancelled, we know that F1 doesn't go racing in anything more than some moderate drizzle these days.

Both Ferrari's to take a 10 place grid penalty for using a 5th engine (although for 2016 development reasons rather than running out).

I would therefore like to take the opportunity to congratulate Hamilton on winning the title this weekend.

You never know, maybe the Mercedes power unit will go bang or have some other misc issue and Ferrari can come from behind to win!

New engines for the Ferrari's mean penalties for Vettel and Raikkonen. Vettel tries to put a good face on his slight title chances ending.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/121451

Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen will take 10-place grid penalties for Sunday's United States Grand Prix after their Ferrari Formula 1 team chose to introduce an updated power unit.

It is understood Ferrari always planned to introduce a new engine for Austin as it will allow the Scuderia fresh engines for the remaining four races while working on development for its 2016 power unit as it bids to catch rival Mercedes.

As Vettel and Raikkonen have both used up their allocation of four engines this season, following an update at Monza last month, they will incur a penalty for taking the fifth.

"We will have the hit of 10 places penalty for a new engine at this event, but it has always been the plan," said Vettel.

"It's not a big secret, no surprise for us.

"The story is that this was always the plan for us to have the strongest engine available at every single point of the season.

"I think our engine guys have done a massive job, so this should not be understood as a downside. If anything this is very positive."

That would just delay the "inevitable" that most of us anticipated.

Rain to Soak Formula One Grand Prix in Austin, Texas
Brian Lada
By Brian Lada, Meteorologist
October 22, 2015; 8:18 PM ET

People attending the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas this weekend should prepare to get soaked as bouts of heavy rain brings wet conditions to the track.

The Formula One event will face wet conditions each day this weekend at Austin's Circuit of the Americas, affecting the practice sessions on Friday, the qualifying on Saturday and the main event on Sunday afternoon.

Elton John is also scheduled to perform at the track after Sunday's race, but gusty winds and the severity of the rain could cause the concert to be moved, postponed or even canceled.

Unlike the stock cars that race in NASCAR, the Formula One cars are designed to race in wet conditions and have special tires that are designed for racing in the rain. Some people believe that wet conditions can make a Formula One race more exciting and can give some drivers the edge over other drivers that are not as good at driving on a wet track. However, if the rain comes down hard enough, the track's drainage system might not be able to keep up with all of the rain, causing parts of the track to be inundated with water. This would lead to more yellow and red flags during the race.

It is a real possibility that the rain could be too much for the track's drainage system to handle, especially on Sunday when the heaviest downpours move over the Austin area.

Not only will the rain affect the cars on the track, but also the cars in the parking lots. Many of the parking lots at the Circuit of the Americas are made of dirt and gravel and will not fair well in the deluge of rain. The conditions of the parking lots will deteriorate as the weekend progresses, being at their worst on Sunday for the race. People with smaller vehicles that cannot handle the mud might want to consider finding an alternate for of transportation to and from the track to avoid the risk of getting their vehicle stuck in the mud.

If the rain comes down hard enough on Sunday to force the race to be postponed, it is likely to be held on Monday. Although some rain will still be around Austin on Monday, the rain will not be nearly as heavy as Sunday allowing for the race to be completed in its entirety.

Impressed by alonso's speed trap times. Looks like the Honda upgrade has some teeth.
